Evelyn Waldren
Evelyn Esther Nicholas Burleson Whitmaker Waldren (June 25, 1908 – October 25, 1986) was the first woman in Nebraska to become a pilot, the first woman in North Dakota with a transport pilot's license, and one of the first women in the United States with a flight instructor's license. In 1941, she set a new speed and distance record for female pilots in light planes. Childhood Waldren was born Evelyn Esther Nicholas in Stockham, Nebraska. Stockham is a village in Hamilton County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 44 at the 2010 census. History Stockham was platted in 1887 when the Fremont, Elkhorn and Missouri Valley Railroad was extended to that point, but an "Old Stockham" had existed nearby since the 1870s, and the community moved in order to be on the new railroad. Edith Foltz
Edith Magalis Foltz Stearns Grissom was the first female transport pilot in Oregon, the fifth female transport pilot in the United States, and the first female state governor of the National Aeronautic Association. For her work as a transport pilot in World War II, she received the King's Medal for Courage in the Cause of Freedom. By the time she died, she had logged over 5,000 hours of flying time. Early life Edith Foltz was born Edith Magalis in Dallas, Texas. She was the daughter of Richard Edward Magalis, a druggist, and Kate Daisy Bethurum Magalis. She had one brother, Cyrus Magalis. As a young woman, she studied to become a singer. Marriage to Joseph Foltz Her first husband was Joseph Rathelle Foltz Jr., a celery farmer from Milwaukie, Oregon. Air Transport Auxiliary
The Air Transport Auxiliary (ATA) was a British civilian organisation set up at the start of the Second World War with headquarters at White Waltham Airfield in Berkshire. The ATA ferried new, repaired and damaged military aircraft between factories, assembly plants, transatlantic delivery points, maintenance units (MUs), scrapyards, and active service squadrons and airfields, but not to naval aircraft carriers. It also flew service personnel on urgent duty from one place to another and performed some air ambulance work. Notably, around 10% of its pilots were women, and from 1943 they received equal pay to their male colleagues, a first for the British government. Siskiyou Mountains
The Siskiyou Mountains are a coastal subrange of the Klamath Mountains, and located in northwestern California and southwestern Oregon in the United States. They extend in an arc for approximately from east of Crescent City, California, northeast along the north side of the Klamath River into Josephine and Jackson counties in Oregon. The mountain range forms a barrier between the watersheds of the Klamath River to the south and the Rogue River to the north.
