European Publishers Award For Photography
__NOTOC__ The European Publishers Award for Photography was run for 22 years by a number of European publishers, who simultaneously published a photobook of each year's winning portfolio in their own languages. The award was for work on a particular subject that had not previously been published as a book. In its later years it was open to photographers anywhere: European nationality or residence was not required. The award began in 1994 with six publishers. At the time of its apparent end in 2015, two publishers, Dewi Lewis (Britain) and Peliti Associati (Italy) had participated every year since the start. In Germany, Edition Braus published the award-winner from 1994 until 2010 (in 1998 and 1999, as Umschau Braus); Kehrer Verlag took over in 2011. In France, Marval published the winner from 1994 to 1996, in 1997 and 1998, and Actes Sud thereafter. Dewi Lewis
Dewi Lewis (born 10 March 1951) is a Welsh publisher and curator of photography. Career In 1975, Lewis was the founding director of the Bury Metropolitan Arts Association which operates the Met. Lewis also founded and was the first director of Cornerhouse, an arts centre in Manchester, England. Lewis was made an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society in 2004 and was awarded the Society’s inaugural RPS Award for Outstanding Service to Photography in 2009. In 2012, the Kraszna-Krausz Foundation presented him with an award for Outstanding Contribution to Photography Publishing. Lewis has acted as a jury member for several major competitions and as a portfolio reviewer at international photography events including Fotofest and Review Santa Fe (both USA), Lodz Festival (Poland) and PHotoEspaña (Spain). Jeff Mermelstein (born 1957) is an American photojournalist and street photographer, known for his work in New York City. Life and work Mermelstein lives in Greenwood Heights, Brooklyn, New York. Using the camera on an iPhone, he made a series of photographs of messages on people's phone screens in New York City. Maya Goded
Maya Goded Colichio (born 1967, Mexico City, Mexico) is a Mexican photographer and documentary film maker. Since 2002 she has been allied with Magnum Photos and has developed a special focus on images of people from hidden or shunned communities. In 2019 Vogue Magazine identified her as one of the "8 Mexican female photographers who are breaking through on a global level." Life Goded was born in 1967 in Mexico City. In 1993 she worked as an assistant to Mexican photographer Graciela Iturbide. She did her first project in 1994, called ''Tierra Negra'' (''Black Earth''). She worked for three years on this project which consists of a collection images of Afro-Mexicans. Subsequently she went on to explore female sexuality, gender violence, prostitution, and the way women in Mexican society are seen in the traditional role of motherhood. Balazs Gardi
Balazs Gardi is a Hungarian-born, American-based photographer. In 2008, Gardi received two 1st Prizes in the World Press Photo, World Press Photo Awards and won the Photojournalism prize in the Bayeux Calvados-Normandy Award for war correspondents, Bayeux-Calvados Award for War Correspondents for his work from Afghanistan. Jacob Aue Sobol
Jacob Aue Sobol (born 1976) is a Danish photographer. He has worked in East Greenland, Guatemala, Tokyo, Bangkok, Copenhagen, America and Russia. In 2007 Sobol became a nominee at Magnum Photos and a full member in 2012. Four monographs and many catalogues of his work have been published and widely exhibited including at Yossi Milo Gallery in New York and at the Diemar/Noble Photography Gallery in London. Paolo Pellegrin
Paolo Pellegrin (born March 11, 1964) is a photojournalist. He was born in Rome, Italy, into a family of architects. He is a member of the Magnum Photos agency and has won ten World Press Photo awards. Biography Pellegrin studied architecture at L'Università la Sapienza, in Rome, and after three years he decided to change career directions and left to study photography at Istituto Italiano di Fotografia in Rome, from 1986 to 1987. During these years, he met the Italian photographer Enzo Ragazzini, who became his mentor. Dodo
The dodo (''Raphus cucullatus'') is an extinct flightless bird that was endemic to the island of Mauritius, which is east of Madagascar in the Indian Ocean. The dodo's closest genetic relative was the also-extinct Rodrigues solitaire. The two formed the subfamily Raphinae, a clade of extinct flightless birds that were a part of the family which includes pigeons and doves. The closest living relative of the dodo is the Nicobar pigeon. A white dodo was once thought to have existed on the nearby island of Réunion, but it is now believed that this assumption was merely confusion based on the also-extinct Réunion ibis and paintings of white dodos.
