Eugenie Kain
Eugenie Kain (1 April 1960 – 8 January 2010) was an Austrian writer. The daughter of Franz and Margit Kain, she was born in Linz. She studied art history and philosophy at the Catholic Private University Linz and German and Theater Studies in Vienna. From 1984 to 1990, she worked for the newspaper '' Volksstimme''. She helped launch the Linz street paper ' in 1996. From 1999 to 2008, she was a contributor to , In 1982, she was awarded the for her work and then the Buch.Preis in 2003 for her 2001 novel ''Atemnot''. She was awarded the in 2006. Franz Kain
Franz Kain (10 January 1922 – 27 October 1997) was an Austrian writer and politician. He was born in Bad Goisern and was educated locally. He apprenticed as a carpenter but quit and worked as a woodcutter. At the age of 14, he was arrested for distributing leaflets for the communist youth organization and imprisoned for three weeks. Following the Anschluss, he was arrested again in 1941 and was later pressed into service in the German 999th Light Afrika Division. From April 1942 to March 1946, he was held in custody by the Americans as a prisoner of war. When he returned to Austria, Kain began working as a journalist for the newspaper ''Die Neue Zeit'' in Linz. From 1953 to 1956, he was a correspondent for the newspaper '' Volksstimme'' in Berlin. He married Margit Gröblinger in 1961. The couple's daughter Eugenie also became a writer. In 1954, his story "Die Lawine" appeared in the anthology ''Der Kreis hat einen Anfang''. ''Volksstimme'' (German: ''People’s Voice'') was a communist newspaper published between 5 August 1945 and 3 March 1991 in Vienna, Austria. History and profile The newspaper was first published in Vienna on 5 August 1945 under the name of ''Österreichische Volksstimme'' (German: ''Austrian People's Voice''). The paper was the organ of the Austrian Communist Party. The founding publisher was Globus Verlag. Its sister publication was a monthly theoretical journal entitled ''Weg und Ziel''. The paper was renamed as ''Volksstimme'' on 21 February 1957. Its frequency was also changed over time: it was started as a daily, but then it began to be published on a weekly basis.
