Entomological Society Of Ontario
The Entomological Society of Canada or Société d’Entomologie du Canada is one of Canada's most historic scientific societies. The society was founded in Toronto on April 16, 1863. The first Council was composed of President Henry Holmes Croft (1820–1883), Secretary Treasurer William Saunders (scientist) (1836–1914), and Curator Rev. J. Hubbert. First called the Entomological Society of Ontario, which still exists as the provincial entomological society, it was initially based in London, Ontario before moving in 1906 to Guelph, Ontario. In 1950 the society adopted its present name and moved to Ottawa. Henry Holmes Croft
Henry Holmes Croft (March 6, 1820 in London – March 1, 1883 in San Diego, Texas) was a British scientist and educator in Canada. Croft was invited to join the faculty at King's College (now University of Toronto) in Toronto, arriving in 1842. From 1850 to 1853 he was university vice-chancellor and later with the university senate. Croft was a member of the University Rifle Corps (9th Company of The Queen's Own Rifles of Canada) in the 1860s and participated in the Fenian raids as captain in 1866. Croft left Toronto in 1880 to retire to his son's ranch in Texas. William Saunders (scientist)
William Saunders, CMG (June 16, 1836 – September 13, 1914) was a Canadian agriculturalist, entomologist and pharmacist. He was a pioneer in Canadian agricultural science, led the establishment of the Experimental Farm System and served as its first director for almost 25 years. Biography Saunders was born in Crediton, England, the son of James Saunders and Jane (Wollacott) Saunders. Entomology () is the scientific study of insects, a branch of zoology. In the past the term "insect" was less specific, and historically the definition of entomology would also include the study of animals in other arthropod groups, such as arachnids, myriapods, and crustaceans.
