Edi Birsan
Edi Ersalesi Birsan (also known as Ed Birsan) is a Concord City councilmember (vice mayor in 2017 and mayor in 2018), a game designer, an independent business owner in the maritime container inspection industry, and one of the best-known American players of the game Diplomacy. He was born in Brooklyn in 1949, but has resided in the San Francisco Bay Area since 1981. Birsan is married and has two children. Political career In 2012, Birsan was elected to his first term for one of two open seats on the City Council of Concord, California, and was re-elected in 2016 and 2020. In 2021, Birsan ran for Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors for the District 4 seat unsuccessfully. Concord, California
Concord ( ) is the largest city in Contra Costa County, California. According to an estimate completed by the United States Census Bureau, the city had a population of 129,295 in 2019 making it the eighth largest city in the San Francisco Bay Area. Founded in 1869 as Todos Santos by Don Salvio Pacheco II, a noted Californio ranchero, the name was later changed to Concord. Jim Dunnigan
James F. Dunnigan (born 8 August 1943) is an author, military-political analyst, Defense and State Department consultant, and Wargaming, wargame designer currently living in New York City. Career Dunnigan was born in Rockland County, New York. After high school, he volunteered for the military instead of waiting to be drafted. From 1961 to 1964, he worked as a repair technician for the MGM-29 Sergeant, Sergeant ballistic missile; his service included a tour in Korea. Afterwards, he attended Pace University studying accounting, then transferred to Columbia University, graduating with a degree in history in 1970. While still in college, he became involved in wargaming. The Lepanto opening is a type of opening in the board game ''Diplomacy''. Developed by Edi Birsan, it is used by the generally weak Italy, in alliance with Austria, to attack Turkey. It is named after the Battle of Lepanto, in which the Turkish fleet was destroyed by Spanish (which was then ruled by the German-Austrian house of Habsburg) and Italian forces led by a nominally Austrian commander.
