Dukat, Russia
Dukat (russian: Дукат) is an urban locality (an urban-type settlement) in the Omsukchansky District of Magadan Oblast, Russia, located north of Magadan. Population: History In the mid of the 1960s, geologists from Omsukchan discovered a rich ore deposit of silver; and named the settlement of Dukat, founded in 1968, after the ducat, an old trade coin used in Europe. The status of urban-type settlement was assigned by the decision of the Magadan Regional Executive Committee of February 19, 1976. Geography Dukat is located in a valley between two mountains of the Omsukchan Range, Kolyma Highlands, 27 km west of Omsukchan, the raion's seat and the nearest populated place. It is 30 km from Omsukchan Airport and 45 from the ghost town of Galimy. Economy The town is known for its gold mine, one of the largest in Russia, located few km west of the town. Magadan Oblast
Magadan Oblast ( rus, Магаданская область, r=Magadanskaya oblast, p=məgɐˈdanskəjə ˈobləsʲtʲ) is a federal subject (an oblast) of Russia. It is geographically located in the Far East region of the country, and is administratively part of the Far Eastern Federal District. Magadan Oblast has a population of 156,996 ( 2010 Census), making it the least populated oblast and the third-least populated federal subject in Russia. Magadan is the largest city and the capital of Magadan Oblast. The majority of the Oblast's inhabitants live in the city. The coastline has a less severe climate than the interiors, although both are very cold for its latitude. Trade Coin
Trade coins are coins minted by a government, but not necessarily legal tender within the territory of the issuing country. These quasi bullion coins (in rarer cases small change) were thus actually export goods - that is, bullion in the form of coins, used to bulk buy important goods from other countries, where they could be bought at a favourable price, compared to the purchasing power of the same amount of bullion within the trade coins' country of origin. A raion (also spelt rayon) is a type of administrative unit of several post-Soviet states. The term is used for both a type of subnational entity and a division of a city. The word is from the French (meaning 'honeycomb, department'), and is commonly translated as "district" in English. Kolyma Highlands
Kolyma (russian: Колыма́, ) is a region located in the Russian Far East. It is bounded to the north by the East Siberian Sea and the Arctic Ocean, and by the Sea of Okhotsk to the south. The region gets its name from the Kolyma River and mountain system, parts of which were not accurately mapped by Russian surveyors until 1926. Today the region consists roughly of the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug and the Magadan Oblast. The area, part of which is within the Arctic Circle, has a subarctic climate with very cold winters lasting up to six months of the year. Permafrost and tundra cover a large part of the region. Ducat
The ducat () coin was used as a trade coin in Europe from the later Middle Ages from the 13th to 19th centuries. Its most familiar version, the gold ducat or sequin containing around of 98.6% fine gold, originated in Venice in 1284 and gained wide international acceptance over the centuries. Omsukchansky District (russian: Омсукча́нский райо́н) is an administrativeLaw #1292-OZ district (raion), one of the eight in Magadan Oblast, Russia.
