Debora Duyvis
Debora Geertruida Duyvis (1886-1960) was a Dutch illustrator and engraver. Biography Duyvis was born on 17 February 1886 in Amsterdam. She studied at the ''Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten'' (State Academy of Fine Arts). Her instructors included Johannes Josephus Aarts and Antoon Derkinderen. She provided a drawing of Derkinderen for a biography of his childhood memories, published by his wife, the Dutch artist J.H. Derkinderen-Besier titled ''The childhood of Antoon der Kinder described by himself in 1892'', published in 1927. She was a member of the ''Vereniging tot Bevordering der Grafische Kunst'' (VBGK) (Association for the Promotion of Graphic Art). In 1933 Duyvis' reputation as an artist was bolstered by a positive review of her burin engravings by noted critic Bram Hammacher. Richard Roland Holst
Richard Nicolaüs Roland Holst (4 December 1868, Amsterdam - 31 December 1938, Bloemendaal) was a Dutch painter, draftsman, lithographer, book cover designer, etcher and writer. Many of his works were in a modified Symbolist style. Life and work His father, Adriaan Roland Holst, was a manufacturer and underwriter. His nephew, also named Adriaan Roland Holst, was a well known poet. From 1885 to 1890, he studied at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten with August Allebé, among others. After 1918, he was teacher there and served as Director from 1926 to 1934. In 1896, he married the poet and revolutionary, Henriette van der Schalk. Along with his wife, Holst was a socialist and a close friend of the leftist writer, Herman Gorter. Later in his life, he was in a relationship with fellow artist Debora Duyvis from about 1926 until his death. Despite Dutch neutrality, Nazi Germany invaded the Netherlands on 10 May 1940 as part of Fall Gelb (Case Yellow). On 15 May 1940, one day after the bombing of Rotterdam, the Dutch forces surrendered. The Dutch government and the royal family relocated to London. Princess Juliana and her children sought refuge in Ottawa, Canada until after the war. The invaders placed the Netherlands under German occupation, which lasted in some areas until the German surrender in May 1945. Active resistance, at first carried out by a minority, grew in the course of the occupation. The occupiers deported the majority of the country's Jews to Nazi concentration camps. Onze Kunst van Heden (Contemporary Artists/Our Art of Today) was an exhibition held in the winter of 1939 through 1940 at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. Due to the threat of invasion in the years leading up to World War II, the Netherlands' government stored many items from the Rijksmuseum's permanent collection. The resulting empty gallery space was utilized by contemporary Dutch artists to exhibit and sell their art. It was organized by the director of the Rijksmuseum . The show was open to all artists, with each artist allowed to enter four pieces. 902 artists exhibited 3,200 works of art in 74 rooms and cabinets of the Rijksmuseum.
