Dangerous Liaisons (2012 Film)
''Dangerous Liaisons'' () is a 2012 Chinese period romance drama film by Hur Jin-ho loosely based on the 1782 novel with the same title by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos. The novel has been adapted numerous times, including ''Les Liaisons dangereuses'', an adaptation by Roger Vadim (1959), the eponymous Hollywood film (1988), '' Valmont'' (1989), ''Cruel Intentions'' (1999), and ''Untold Scandal'' from South Korea (2003). This version is set in 1930s Shanghai and stars South Korean actor Jang Dong-gun and Chinese actresses Zhang Ziyi and Cecilia Cheung. The film screened in the Directors' Fortnight section at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival, the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival, and the 2012 Busan International Film Festival. Hur Jin-ho
Heo Jin-ho (; born August 8, 1963) is a South Korean film director and screenwriter. Career Heo Jin-ho graduated from Yonsei University with a degree in philosophy and went on to study filmmaking at the Korean Academy of Film Arts. His first steps as a film director did not go unnoticed as his first short, ''For Go-chul'', was selected for the Vancouver International Film Festival. He later co-wrote the script of ''A Single Spark'' and ''Kilimanjaro''. Many of his feature films, ''Christmas in August'' (shown at the Critics' Week in Cannes in 1998), ''One Fine Spring Day'' (2001), '' April Snow'' (2005), ''Happiness'' (2007) and '' A Good Rain Knows'' (2009) are variations on Hur's favorite theme: love. ''Cruel Intentions'' is a 1999 American teen romantic drama film written and directed by Roger Kumble and starring Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillippe, Reese Witherspoon, and Selma Blair. The film is a modern retelling of Pierre Choderlos de Laclos' 1782 novel ''Les Liaisons dangereuses'', set in New York City among rich high schoolers. The 17th Busan International Film Festival was held from October 4 to October 13, 2012 at the Busan Cinema Center and was hosted by Ahn Sung-ki and Chinese actress Tang Wei, who is the first foreign celebrity to host the event. The history of Shanghai spans over a thousand years and closely parallels the development of modern China. Originally a small agricultural village, Shanghai developed during the late Qing dynasty (1644–1912) as one of China's principal trading ports.
