Highway D4 (Slovakia)
D4 is a motorway in southwestern Slovakia. The planned highway is commonly referred to as the Bratislava bypass. For decades, there was only a short stretch from Austrian border at Jarovce to the junction with D2 (part of the former D61), construction of which started in 1996 and was opened in 1998. Construction of various other parts started in the late 2010s, with several openings throughout 2020 and 2021. The extension to the motorway D1 between Bratislava and Senec is underway, in order to connect the southern bypass of Bratislava to the country's main traffic artery. The bypass also intersects with expressway R7, parts of which are already open as well. History The connecting motorway on the Austrian side, Nordost Autobahn A6 was opened on 19 November 2007. The highway connects the border with Slovakia to the Ost Autobahn A4. It provided connection to 3rd of its 5 neighboring country, until 2007 Slovakia was connected by motorway only to the Czech Republic and Hungary. ...

The tunnel goes under the Little Carpathians forest. It is the first two-tube tunnel in Slovakia and by its opening, the entire D2 motorway in Slovakia was completed. Preparation and facts The preparation works for both the tunnel and the motorway section began in the 1990s. The route had to be chosen; there were 3 variants: * 1st variant suggested a motorway along the old road without tunnel * 2nd variant suggested a shorter tunnel * 3rd variant suggested a longer tunnel After studying all the 3 variants, the variant with a shorter tunnel was selected, mainly for environmental reasons. The tunnel from that variant is 1440 m long for the western (right) tube, and 1415 m for the eastern (left) tube. The covered parts near the building of the Slovak Academy of Sciences ar ...

Situated on the right bank of the river Danube, the area shares a land border with Austria, and is home to around 100,000 people. The Hungarian name, ''Ligetfalva'', (later Pozsonyligetfalu, literally "parkland village") originates from the 1860s. After the foundation of Czechoslovakia, it was officially renamed to ''Petržalka'' (1920). The name refers to vegetables and herbs that were grown there (''petržlen'' means "parsley"). History Before the 18th century, the territory of present-day Petržalka consisted of several regularly flooded islands and was not suitable for larger permanent settlement. The deed of donation ...
