W Series (championship)
W Series is an all-female Formula racing, single-seater racing championship. The series' first season was in 2019; it featured twenty drivers contesting six races. History The W Series was publicly launched on 10 October 2018. Rumours about the creation of a female-only racing series had begun to circulate in November 2017. It was created in response to the lack of female drivers progressing to the highest levels of motorsport, particularly Formula 1. The series has the backing of a number of prominent members of the motorsport community, including former F1 driver David Coulthard and engineer Adrian Newey. For the 2019 W Series, inaugural season in 2019, all cars were operated by Hitech Racing, Hitech GP. The 2019 championship consisted of six races, all of which were run in Europe in support of the 2019 Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters, 2019 DTM. The 2021 W Series Spielberg round was the first round of seven in the 2021 W Series, and took place at the Red Bull Ring in Austria on 26 June 2021. The event was an undercard to the 2021 Formula One World Championship round at the same circuit. Report Background Six new drivers entered the championship having successfully applied for entry into the cancelled 2020 season – Ayla Ågren, Abbie Eaton, Belén García, Nerea Martí, Irina Sidorkova and Bruna Tomaselli. Bruna Tomaselli
Bruna Alberti Tomaselli (born 18 September 1997 in Caibi) is a Brazilian female racing driver. She currently competes in the W Series. Biography Tomaselli began her professional career in Fórmula Junior Brasil, a category comparable to Formula Ford in other countries. Following two seasons there, she would move up to Fórmula 4 Sudamericana, run to Formula Renault 1.6 regulations – where she finished fourth in her second season. She moved to the United States in 2017, joining the Road to Indy through the U.S. F2000 National Championship. She undertook a part-time campaign initially, and signed with Team Pelfrey for a full-time campaign in 2018 – finishing 16th in the standings. The 2019 W Series Brands Hatch round (also commercially referred to as #WRace6) was the sixth and final round of the 2019 W Series, and took place at Brands Hatch in the United Kingdom on 11 August 2019. The event was an undercard to the 2019 Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters round at the same circuit. 2019 W Series Zolder Round
The 2019 W Series Zolder round (also commercially referred to as #WRace2) was the second round of the 2019 W Series, and took place at Circuit Zolder in Belgium on 18 May 2019. The event was an undercard to the 2019 Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters round at the same circuit. Briton Jamie Chadwick took pole position but the race was won by Dutch driver Beitske Visser, who took an early lead and was able to hold on to it despite two safety car periods. Sarah Bovy
Sarah Bovy (born 15 May 1989 in Liège) is a Belgian female racing driver. She has recently competed with the Iron Dames team in multiple series, including the FIA World Endurance Championship and at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Biography Following two years in karting, Bovy began her racing career as a Formula Renault Academy driver in Formula Renault 1.6 Belgium. Former Formula One driver Thierry Boutsen took her under his wing as part of his team, and began an association with the Boutsen-Ginion squad that saw her race in GT, touring car and silhouette racing disciplines before taking a year's break in 2014 due to a lack of funding and undertook a Bachelor of Marketing course. The 2021 W Series Austin round was the seventh and final round of the 2021 W Series, and took place at the Circuit of the Americas in the United States on the 23rd and 24 October 2021. The event was an undercard to the 2021 Formula One World Championship round at the same circuit. Report Background The championship was originally scheduled to hold two events in the Americas, one at the Circuit of the Americas and another at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez in support of the 2021 Mexico City Grand Prix – however due to calendar changes for Formula One, W Series opted to hold just the one event in Austin but add a second race to their support billing. The 2019 W Series Hockenheim round (also commercially referred to as #WRace1) was the first round of the 2019 W Series, and took place at the Hockenheimring in Germany on 4 May 2019. The event was an undercard to the 2019 Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters round at the same circuit. Report Background The event was the inaugural round of the W Series (championship), W Series, and the first professionally organised female-only motorsport event since the final round of the Formula Woman championship for Caterhams was held at Brands Hatch in 2006. 61 drivers successfully submitted applications to contest the championship, and were required to attend an evaluation day to become part of the 18-driver grid. Caitlin Wood (born 15 January 1997 in Maitland, New South Wales) is an Australian female racing driver who last competed in the 2021 W Series. Biography Hailing from Tenambit in the New South Wales Hunter Valley, Wood began her professional motorsport career in 2013 in a state-level Formula Ford championship. She ended her debut in car racing 5th out of 7 in the championship. She subsequently moved up to the inaugural Australian Formula Ford Championship in 2015, however she struggled to 21st in the championship with only three points finishes. The Australian Formula 4 Championship would become the new national feeder series in Australia, and Wood contested a three-event part-time schedule – eventually finishing 13th in the championship before setting her sights on Europe. Fabienne Wohlwend (born 7 November 1997 in Vaduz) is a female racing driver from Liechtenstein who competes in the W Series. Biography Formula 4 Wohlwend entered car racing in 2016, having been successful in junior karting in Liechtenstein and Switzerland. She debuted in the Italian F4 Championship with Aragón Racing, before a mid-season switch to DR Formula. She failed to qualify for the final at the first round in Misano (the series ran a unique format for said round after 41 cars entered a circuit with a capacity of 36) and, after the qualifying race system was abandoned, did not score any points during the course of the season - her best finish being an 11th place in the final race of the season at Monza. Sarah Moore (racing Driver)
Sarah Moore (born 22 October 1993) is a British racing driver. She won the Ginetta Junior Championship in 2009 and competed in the InterSteps Championship in 2011. She was awarded the Rising Star status by the British Racing Drivers' Club in 2009. Moore was the first female racing driver to win a TOCA-sanctioned race, and the first to win a junior mixed-gender, national-level series in the UK. She is the first female to have won the Britcar Endurance Championship.
