Communications in Zimbabwe refers to the communication services available in Zimbabwe. Background Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ) was established by the Postal and Telecommunications Act in 2000 and started its operations in March 2001. This legislation brought about a new institutional framework for telecommunications in Zimbabwe. Telephone system The phone system was once one of the best in Africa, but now suffers from poor maintenance; more than 100,000 outstanding requests for connection despite an equally large number of installed but unused main lines. Zimbabwe (), officially the Republic of Zimbabwe, is a landlocked country located in Southeast Africa, between the Zambezi and Limpopo Rivers, bordered by South Africa to the south, Botswana to the south-west, Zambia to the north, and Mozambique to the east. Khulumani FM
Khulumani FM, also known as KFM95.0 is a provincial radio station that broadcasts from the metropolitan province of Bulawayo in Matabeleland region. It was launched on March 2, 2018 to cater for the audiences in the province and surrounding areas within a 60 km radius. The station is based in ZBC's Montrose Studios in Bulawayo. The station was positively welcomed by Bulawayo residents, artists, and businesses as an additional flavour to complement the commercial radio station Skyz Metro FM in the same city. It broadcasts in 7 languages, namely English, Ndebele, Xhosa, Kalanga, Venda, Sotho and Tonga. The station is fully owned, operated, and controlled by the state broadcaster and is not a community radio station. Robert Gabriel Mugabe (; ; 21 February 1924 – 6 September 2019) was a Zimbabwean revolutionary and politician who served as Prime Minister of Zimbabwe from 1980 to 1987 and then as President from 1987 to 2017. ZBC TV, also known as ZTV, is Zimbabwe's public free to air television network that is fully owned and operated by the state broadcaster. History In the country, television was introduced on 15 November 1960, making it the second country after Nigeria to launch such services in the Sub Saharan Africa and the first in Southern Africa. It was operated by a private company called Rhodesian Television (RTV) with its major shareholders being South African companies. RTV was taken over by the government and became part of the then state broadcaster, Rhodesian Broadcasting Corporation (RBC) in 1976. Star FM is a commercial urban radio station that broadcasts throughout Zimbabwe from the country's capital, Harare. It first aired in June 2012 and is owned by Zimbabwe Newspapers, which owns Bulawayo's '' The Chronicle'', Harare's '' The Herald'' and several other regional publications. ZiFM Stereo is a Zimbabwean private commercial radio station that is based in the country's capital, Harare. It broadcasts throughout the country on FM. It began broadcasting on 15 August 2012. It is Zimbabwe's first free to air radio station to stream online. It is also known to be the country's first privately owned radio station. It was launched just months after the launch of the state owned Star FM, which started broadcasting on 25 June of the same year. ZiFM took part in the historical tribute to the veteran Zimbabwean broadcaster, Peter Johns who died in London on 27 April 2020.
