ZiFM Stereo
ZiFM Stereo is a Zimbabwean private commercial radio station that is based in the country's capital, Harare. It broadcasts throughout the country on FM. It began broadcasting on 15 August 2012. It is Zimbabwe's first free to air radio station to stream online. It is also known to be the country's first privately owned radio station. It was launched just months after the launch of the state owned Star FM, which started broadcasting on 25 June of the same year. ZiFM took part in the historical tribute to the veteran Zimbabwean broadcaster, Peter Johns who died in London on 27 April 2020. The hour-long multicast that took place on 2 May 2020 was also streamed live on Power FM and Star FM. Harare
Harare (; formerly Salisbury ) is the capital and most populous city of Zimbabwe. The city proper has an area of 940 km2 (371 mi2) and a population of 2.12 million in the 2012 census and an estimated 3.12 million in its metropolitan area in 2019. Situated in north-eastern Zimbabwe in the country's Mashonaland region, Harare is a metropolitan province, which also incorporates the municipalities of Chitungwiza and Epworth. Masvingo
Masvingo is a city in south-eastern Zimbabwe and the capital of Masvingo Province. The city is situated close to Great Zimbabwe, the national monument from which the country takes its name and close to Lake Mutirikwi, its recreational park, the Kyle dam and the Kyle National Reserve where there are many different animal species. It is mostly populated by the Karanga people who form the biggest branch of the various Shona tribes in Zimbabwe. History The city was known as Fort Victoria until 1982, when its name was briefly changed to Nyanda, after a mountain about 10 kilometres south of the town, on the Masvingo to Beitbridge Road. Gweru
Gweru is a city in central Zimbabwe. Near the geographical centre of the country. It is on the centre of Midlands Province. Originally an area known to the Northern Ndebele people, Ndebele as "The Steep Place" because of the Gweru River's high Bank (geography), banks, in 1894 it became the site of a military outpost established by Leander Starr Jameson. In 1914 it attained Municipality, municipal status, and in 1971 it became a city. The city has a population of 158,200 as of the 2022 census. Gweru is known for farming activities in beef cattle, crop farming, and commercial gardening of crops for the export market. Power FM Zimbabwe
Power FM is a Zimbabwean state owned urban music radio station that broadcasts nationwide on FM. It was previously known as Radio 3 and later 3FM. The station was set up soon after the country got its independence in 1980 to cater for the urban youth. When it launched, it was broadcasting for 19 hours a day. It became a 24 hour station in the late 90s. The station was renamed to Power FM in 2004, at the time when it was broadcasting 100% Zimbabwean music, a law that was enforced by the former Zimbabwe's Information and Broadcasting minister, Jonathan Moyo. Many Zimbabweans still criticise the former minister for dismantling the station and changing the format and names of all 4 national radio stations and the country's only TV station at the time. ''The Independent'' is a British online newspaper. It was established in 1986 as a national morning printed paper. Nicknamed the ''Indy'', it began as a broadsheet and changed to tabloid format in 2003. The last printed edition was published on Saturday 26 March 2016, leaving only the online edition. Star FM Zimbabwe
Star FM is a commercial urban radio station that broadcasts throughout Zimbabwe from the country's capital, Harare. It first aired in June 2012 and is owned by Zimbabwe Newspapers, which owns Bulawayo's '' The Chronicle'', Harare's '' The Herald'' and several other regional publications. Zimpapers also owns a number of regional commercial radio stations including Diamond FM in Mutare, Nyaminyami FM in Kariba and Capitalk 100.4 FM in the capital Harare. In May 2018, Zimpapers was awarded a content distribution licence by the Broadcasting Authority of Zimbabwe and went on to launch Zimpapers Television (ZTN) which has been broadcasting online since launch. ''The Herald'' is a state-owned daily newspaper published in Harare, the capital of Zimbabwe. History Origins The newspaper's origins date back to the 19th century. Its forerunner was launched on 27 June 1891 by William Fairbridge for the Argus group of South Africa. Named the ''Mashonaland Herald and Zambesian Times'', it was a weekly, hand-written news sheet produced using the cyclostyle duplicating process.
