Christianity In Senegal
Religion and beliefs occupy an important place in the daily life of the nation of Senegal. Many denominations of the religion of Islam (the largest faith) are represented. Christians (principally Catholics) represents 3.3%. Other belief's are officially practiced by 0.1% of the population, particularly Serer, but members of other religions also often partake in traditional practices. Religious freedom is protected in Senegal by law. Senegalese culture, in general, is religiously tolerant. Major religions in Senegal Islam About 97% of the Senegalese population is Muslim, and many denominations of this faith are practised. Approximately 1% of the Muslim population practices Ahmadiyya. Our Lady Of Victories Cathedral, Dakar
The Our Lady of Victories Cathedral (french: Cathédrale Notre Dame des Victoires) or Cathedral of Dakar, is a religious building that serves as the Catholic cathedral in the city of Dakar, the capital of the African country of Senegal, which is the seat of the Archdiocese of Dakar (Latin: ''Archidioecesis Dakarensis''). The sanctuary was built on the site of an ancient Lebu cemetery, whose land was granted by the government to the church. The construction began in 1924 and the cathedral was consecrated 12 years later, on 2 February 1936, by Cardinal Jean Verdier, archbishop of Paris. In 1964, initial the inscription above the entrance was changed into the current one. In 2001 in the church the funeral of former President Leopold Senghor was performed. Saint Louis or Saint-Louis ( wo, Ndar), is the capital of Senegal's Saint-Louis Region. Located in the northwest of Senegal, near the mouth of the Senegal River, and 320 km north of Senegal's capital city Dakar, it has a population officially estimated at 258,592 in 2021. Saint-Louis was the capital of the French colony of Senegal from 1673 until 1902 and French West Africa from 1895 until 1902, when the capital was moved to Dakar. There is a significant community of Lebanese people in Senegal. Migration history The first trader from Ottoman Lebanon arrived in French Senegal in the 1860s. However, early migration was slow; by 1900, there were only about one hundred Lebanese living in the country, mostly from the vicinity of Tyre. They worked as street vendors in Dakar, Saint-Louis and Rufisque. After World War I, they began to move into the peanut trade. With the establishment of the French Mandate of Lebanon, Lebanese immigration expanded sharply.
