Catocala Serena
''Catocala serena'', the serene underwing, is a moth of the family Erebidae. It is found from southern Ontario, New York (state), New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, as far south as to at least Tennessee, and west to Pennsylvania, Illinois and at least as far west as eastern Wisconsin. The wingspan is 55–60 mm. Adults are on wing from July to September depending on the location. There is probably one generation per year. The larvae feed on ''Carya ovata'' and ''Juglans nigra''. Moth
Moths are a paraphyletic group of insects that includes all members of the order Lepidoptera that are not butterflies, with moths making up the vast majority of the order. Erebidae
The Erebidae are a family of moths in the superfamily Noctuoidea. The family is among the largest families of moths by species count and contains a wide variety of well-known macromoth groups. The family includes the underwings ('' Catocala''); litter moths (Herminiinae); tiger, lichen, and wasp moths (Arctiinae); tussock moths (Lymantriinae), including the arctic woolly bear moth (''Gynaephora groenlandica''); piercing moths ( Calpinae and others); micronoctuoid moths (Micronoctuini); snout moths (Hypeninae); and zales, though many of these common names can also refer to moths outside the Erebidae (for example, crambid snout moths). ''Carya ovata'', the shagbark hickory, is a common hickory in the Eastern United States and southeast Canada. It is a large, deciduous tree, growing well over tall, and can live more than 350 years. The tallest measured shagbark, located in Savage Gulf, Tennessee, is over tall . Mature shagbarks are easy to recognize because, as their name implies, they have shaggy bark.
