Castlemagner GAA is a Gaelic Athletic Association club based in the village of Castlemagner in the north-west of County Cork, Ireland. Founded in 1900, the club plays both hurling and football and is affiliated with Duhallow GAA. The club currently competes in the Duhallow Junior A Hurling Championship and the Duhallow Junior A Football Championship. At under age level, the Castlemagner club amalgamates with Kilbrin as Croke Rovers - as neither club have been able to field an underage team on their own. Ladies' Gaelic football and camogie are also played within the club. The Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA; ga, Cumann Lúthchleas Gael ; CLG) is an Irish international amateur sporting and cultural organisation, focused primarily on promoting indigenous Gaelic games and pastimes, which include the traditional Irish sports of hurling, camogie, Gaelic football, Gaelic handball and rounders. Castlemagner
Castlemagner () is a village and townland in the Duhallow area of north-west County Cork, Ireland. Castlemagner is within the Cork North-West (Dáil constituency). History The area takes its name from the eponymous Castle Magner, a Norman-era tower house which is located approximately east of the village itself on the eastern boundary of Castlemagner townland. Owned by a Richard Magner during the Irish Rebellion of 1641, the tower house was largely destroyed in the late 16th century. The lands surrounding Castle Magner were confiscated during the Cromwellian conquest of Ireland. The castle is largely in ruin, though the stair turret and parts of the surrounding bawn wall remain. Close to the castle is Saint Bridget's Church, a disused but largely extant Church of Ireland church. While the church itself was built in the early 19th century, the surrounding cemetery contains gravestones which are dated from the 18th century and earlier. Duhallow GAA
Duhallow GAA is a Gaelic football and hurling division in the barony of Duhallow, County Cork, Ireland. This barony is situated in the northwest region of the county, and includes towns such as Kanturk, Millstreet, and Newmarket. It is one of eight divisions of Cork County Board. It organizes competitions for the clubs within the division, from Under 12 up to the adult level. The winners of these competitions compete against other divisional champions to determine which club is the county champion. In addition, the division selects football and hurling teams from the adult teams playing at junior level or county intermediate level, and these then compete for the Cork Senior Football Championship and Cork Senior Hurling Championship. The Duhallow Junior A Hurling Championship (known for sponsorship reasons as the Kanturk Co-Op Mart Junior A Hurling Championship) is an annual hurling competition organised by the Duhallow Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association since 1933 for junior hurling teams in the Barony of Duhallow in County Cork, Ireland. The series of games are played during the summer and autumn months. The championship starts with 2 groups and the group winners and runners-up advance to the knockout stage. This gives each team at least 2 matches. The Duhallow Junior Championship is an integral part of the wider Cork Junior Hurling Championship. The winners and runners-up of the Duhallow championship join their counterparts from the other six divisions to contest the county championship. Duhallow Junior A Football Championship
The Duhallow Junior A Football Championship is the top footballing competition in the Duhallow division in Cork. It was first run after the formation of the Duhallow division in 1933. The Championship includes a group stage, therefore every team has at least 2 matches. The winners and runner up of this competition go on to compete in the Cork Junior A Football Championship. Cullen are the title-holders after defeating Kanturk by 4-16 to 1-02 in the 2022 championship final played in Boherbue. Format Group stage The 6 teams are divided into two groups of three. Over the course of the group stage, each team plays once against the others in the group, resulting in each team being guaranteed at least two games. Kilbrin GAA
Kilbrin GAA is a Gaelic Athletic Association club based in the village of Kilbrin in the north-west of County Cork, Ireland which forms part of the parish of Ballyclough and Kilbrin. The club plays both Gaelic Football and Hurling and is affiliated with Duhallow GAA. The club competes in the Duhallow Junior A Hurling Championship and the Duhallow Junior B Football Championship. At under age level, an amalgamation of Kilbrin and Castlemagner as Croke Rovers has addressed an issue as neither club would have been able to field an underage team on their own. Ladies' Gaelic football ( ga, Peil Ghaelach na mBan) is a women's team sport. It is the women's equivalent of Gaelic football. Ladies' football is organised by the Ladies' Gaelic Football Association. Two teams of 15 players kick or hand-pass a round ball towards goals at each end of a grass pitch, since May 2022 women Gaelic footballers have to wear shin pads. The Cork Junior A Football Championship (known for sponsorship reasons as the Co-Op Superstores Cork Junior A Football Championship and abbreviated to the Cork JAFC) is an annual Gaelic football competition organised by the Cork County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association and contested by the top-ranking junior clubs in the county of Cork in Ireland. It is the fifth tier overall in the entire Cork football championship system.
