Carterton, Oxfordshire
Carterton is a town in West Oxfordshire district in the county of Oxfordshire, England and is south-west of Witney. The 2011 Census recorded the parish's population as 15,769. History Much of what is now the northern part of the town was held by the Moleyns family from at least 1369, but in 1429 William Lord Moleyns was killed at the siege of Orléans and the land passed to the Hungerford family. During the medieval period the main road through Carterton was one of the most important in the country, taking trains of packhorses laden with Cotswold wool over Radcot Bridge and on to Southampton for export to the weaving centre of Europe. In the 1770s the land was acquired by the Duke of Marlborough. The pattern of the present settlement dates from 1894 when part of the estate was sold to Homesteads Limited whose director was William Carter. Carterton Community College is a Mixed-sex education, coeducational secondary school located in Carterton, Oxfordshire, Carterton in the English county of Oxfordshire. It is a Community school (England and Wales), community school administered by Oxfordshire County Council. The school offers General Certificate of Secondary Education, GCSEs, Business and Technology Education Council, BTECs and OCR Nationals as programmes of study for pupils. In 2007, former headteacher Alan Klee was found guilty of bullying staff and misconduct while at Carterton Community College. Klee resigned from Carterton Community College in 2003. The station had two stone-built platforms, a passing loop, and a concrete station building. It had initially been considered to name the station "Black Bourton". Carterton railway station is a suburban railway station serving Carterton, New Zealand. The station is located on the Wairarapa Line, north of and south of . The Wairarapa Connection serves the station several times daily with services to Wellington and Masterton. The station has a single seven-car side platform. This station retains its original station building (built in 1879-80), freight yard and loading bank, though freight is no longer accepted. A ticket office operates in the station building prior to the departure of commuter trains bound for Wellington. Heritage rolling stock is stored in the yard. The Carterton Railway Museum, operated from the station building by the Wairarapa Railway Restoration Society, is open every Sunday between 10am and 4pm. Cartersville is the county seat of Bartow County. History Cartersville, originally known as Birmingham, was founded by English-Americans in 1832. The town was incorporated as Cartersville in 1854. The present name is for Col. Farish Carter of Milledgeville, the owner of a large plantation. Cartersville was the long-time home of Amos Akerman, U.S. Attorney General under President Ulysses S. Grant; in that office he spearheaded the federal prosecution of members of the Ku Klux Klan and was one of the most important public servants of the Reconstruction era.
