Carterville, Illinois
Carterville is a city in Williamson County, Illinois, United States. At the 2020 census, the city's population was 5,848. The city is part of the Carbondale-Marion combined statistical area and has grown considerably as a residential community of Carbondale and Marion. The city is located next to Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge. The Refuge's of land and water contain a wide diversity of flora and fauna. History Carterville was founded by George Monroe McNeill and Laban Carter. McNeill married Olive Herrin of Herrin's Prairie and in 1866 they settled on the farm now known as Carterville. Carter came to Williamson County in 1864, purchased of land, and helped organize and secure a post office for Carterville in 1871. The town was named in his honor. McNeill was one of the youngest members of the Union army during the American Civil War. He enlisted at 16 and was with General William T. Sherman during his March to the Sea. Carterville High School is a public high school in Carterville, Illinois, United States. History It has an enrollment of approximately 609 students. The school is a member of Illinois High School Association as a Class 4A member of the River to River Conference (Mississippi Division). Carterville's mascot is the Lion and the school colors are orange and navy blue. The high school moved into a new facility for the 2011–2012 school year. New High School In August 2011, Carterville's students and teachers moved into the new high school building. The new 225,000 square foot school was built for $25 million. It features two gyms; a smaller multi-purpose gym with seating for 500 and big gym with seating capacity of 2,500. The new auditorium has seating for 750. Two stories of classrooms and laboratories complete the front academic wing. Carterville, Missouri
Carterville is a city in Jasper County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,855 at the 2020 census. It is part of the Joplin, Missouri Metropolitan Statistical Area. History While one James Carter settled in Jasper County in 1841, the land on which Carterville was built was originally owned by his son, James George Leroy Carter, who created a farm in the 1860’s. The town considers itself founded in 1875, when a post office called Carterville opened that year. However, the settlement was not officially incorporated until 1882. Early Carterville was little more than a lead-mining camp, one of many in the tri-state mining district in southwestern Missouri, southeastern Kansas and northwestern Oklahoma. It nevertheless thrived, and at one time had a population of over 12,000 residents, making it larger than nearby Webb City. Carterville, Montana
Carterville (or Cartersville) is an unincorporated community in Rosebud County, Montana, United States. History Carterville (variant name Cartersville) was platted with streets and lots early in the 1900s. The village eventually had a general store, grocery store, post office, beer tavern, elementary school serving grades 1–8, and Milwaukee railroad depot. The businesses closed in the 1950s. The post office was established in 1909, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1957. The post office building also housed a small grocery store. Carterville Elementary School taught grades 1-8 until the late 1950s, and grades 1-6 later. The elementary school report cards issued to students stated that the school name was Carterville (not Cartersville). Students in higher grades would be bused to Rosebud High School, located south of Yellowstone River in Rosebud, Montana. Cartersville is the county seat of Bartow County. History Cartersville, originally known as Birmingham, was founded by English-Americans in 1832. The town was incorporated as Cartersville in 1854. The present name is for Col. Farish Carter of Milledgeville, the owner of a large plantation. Cartersville was the long-time home of Amos Akerman, U.S. Attorney General under President Ulysses S. Grant; in that office he spearheaded the federal prosecution of members of the Ku Klux Klan and was one of the most important public servants of the Reconstruction era.
