Carlos Varela (Spanish Footballer)
Carlos Vila Varela (born 15 September 1977) is a Spanish former footballer who played as a midfielder. He spent almost his entire football career in Switzerland. Career Early years Born in Geneva, Switzerland, Varela played his youth football with local amateur club FC Vernier as he was scouted by Servette and he joined their youth department in 1993. He advanced from their M-17 team straight in to their first team, who played in the Swiss National League A, in the summer of 1995. As 18-year-old he only had two appearances in the 1995–96 Nationalliga A that season, but he also had appearances for their U-21 team. During the 1996–97 season he had 16 appearances for the first team and scored his first league goal. Break through Varela worked his way up in Servette's first team, to becoming a regular starter and regular goal scorer. 1998–99 FC Basel Season
The 1998–99 FC Basel, Fussball Club Basel 1893 season was their 106th season since the club's foundation. Following their promotion in the 1993–94 Nationalliga A, 1993–94 season this was their fifth consecutive season in the highest tier of Swiss football. René C. Jäggi was the club's chairman for the third year. FC Basel played their home games in the St. Jakob Stadium until 13 Dezember 1998. SK Brann
Sportsklubben Brann (commonly known as Brann, and less often as SK Brann) is a Norwegian professional football club, founded 26 September 1908, from Bergen. 2000–01 UEFA Cup
Liverpool won the 2000–01 UEFA Cup with a golden goal in the final against Alavés for their third title in the competition. It completed a cup treble for the club, as they also won the FA Cup and the League Cup that season. The conclusion of the tournament by a golden goal is the only instance in any of the major European club cup competitions until the abolition of the rule in 2002. Galatasaray could not defend their title as they automatically qualified for the 2000–01 UEFA Champions League and also reached the knockout stage. Christian Gross
Christian Jürgen Gross (born 14 August 1954) is a Swiss football manager and former player who most recently coached Schalke 04. He played as a sweeper and central midfielder. Gross was manager of Basel from 1 July 1999 to 27 May 2009, winning four Swiss Super Leagues and four Swiss Cups. As manager of Tottenham Hotspur between November 1997 and September 1998, Gross became the first Swiss to manage in the Premier League. Playing career Gross began his playing career at SV Höngg before moving to Grasshopper in 1965, which he left in 1976. After two years at Lausanne-Sport and two seasons at Neuchâtel Xamax, he moved to Germany in 1980 to play for VfL Bochum of the Bundesliga. Stadion Allmend
Stadion Allmend was a multi-purpose stadium in Lucerne, Switzerland. Its current primary use was for football matches. The stadium had a capacity of 25,000, although security concerns mandate limiting audiences to 15,000. The stadium had been home to FC Lucerne since 1934. Over the years the stadium has undergone some transformations. In 1957 a new stand with 2500 seats was added. Between 1981 and 1983 a new grandstand was built. In 1995 the club redeveloped the North Stand. In 2007 the Swiss Football Association decided that the stadium was no longer good enough to be used in the Swiss Super League.
