Calle De Toledo
The Calle de Toledo is a historic street in central Madrid, Spain, running across the Centro and Arganzuela districts. History and description Straddling along the Centro and Arganzuela districts, it starts at the Plaza Mayor and ends at the Glorieta de las Pirámides. It was already named ''Toledo'' in the 16th century. Until the late 15th century it ended at the Hospital of La Latina. In the early 17th century the part near the Plaza Mayor was widened. Following the 1790 fire in the Plaza Mayor, the buildings of the Portal de Cofreros were rebuilt with new materials following the anti-fire regulations dictated by Juan de Villanueva. The street consolidated as one of the specialised commercial streets in the city centre by the early 20th century. The image of the northernmost end near the Plaza Mayor became a part of the Antifascist collective memory with the photograph of the ''¡ No pasarán!'' banner hanged in the street during the Spanish Civil War. The Instituto de Enseñanza Secundaria San Isidro (IES San Isidro) is a co-educational day school for pupils from 12 to 18 years of age. It is located in the historical Calle de Toledo in Madrid, Spain. It is one of 66 secondary schools established in provincial capitals and other major cities under the 1836 Plan General de Instrucción Pública. Most of these schools occupied the premises of disentailed convents and other church buildings. Originally a boys' school, it became coeducational and state-owned in the second half of the 20th century. The school occupies part of a site belonging to several earlier schools, indirectly tracing its origins to 1346, and is considered the oldest non-university education center in Spain. Embajadores is an administrative neighborhood (''barrio'') of Madrid, belonging to the Centro District. 2021 Madrid Explosion
On 20 January 2021, an explosion occurred in a building on Calle de Toledo in Madrid, Spain, causing it to partially collapse. The blast killed four people and wounded ten others. Explosion At about 14:55 CET, at a residence which provided training for Catholic priests and gave meals to homeless people, on Calle de Toledo, in Madrid, Spain, neighbors felt a weird smell. When they were trying to find out where it came from, the building exploded because of a gas leak originated in the street. This massive explosion partially destroyed the building but didn't leave anybody under the debris. Four men were killed in the blast: a 35-year-old electrician, who was also a parishioner and had gone there to visit his friend, the priest; a 45-year-old bricklayer who was working nearby the scene; a 46-year-old Bulgarian passerby; and a 36-year-old parish priest who died in hospital the day after the explosion.
