Ericoid Mycorrhiza
The ericoid mycorrhiza is a mutualistic relationship formed between members of the plant family Ericaceae and several lineages of mycorrhizal fungi. This symbiosis represents an important adaptation to acidic and nutrient poor soils that species in the Ericaceae typically inhabit, including boreal forests, bogs, and heathlands. Molecular clock estimates suggest that the symbiosis originated approximately 140 million years ago. John Cairney (mycologist)
John William Gibson Cairney (1959–2012) was an eminent Scottish–Australian mycologist and Director of the Western Sydney University, UWS Centre for Plants and the Environment. Cairney specialised in mycorrhiza, mycorrhizal biology and ecology, particularly of Ericoid mycorrhiza, ericoid- and Ectomycorrhiza. Cairney contributed significantly to mycorrhizal research, publishing over 150 manuscripts and serving as the associate editor, editor or on the advisoral panel for numerous scientific journals including: ''New Phytologist'', ''Plant and Soil'', ''Fungal Biology, Mycological Research'' and the ''Journal of Soils and Sediments''. Helotiales is an order of the class Leotiomycetes within the division Ascomycota. The taxonomy within Helotiales has been debated. It has expanded significantly as genomic techniques for taxonomical identification have become more commonly used. , the order is estimated to contain 30 accepted families, 519 genera, and 6266 species. Helotiales is the largest order of non-stromatic discomycetes that usually, but not always, have brightly coloured apothecia. Ascomycota is a phylum of the kingdom Fungi that, together with the Basidiomycota, forms the subkingdom Dikarya. Its members are commonly known as the sac fungi or ascomycetes. It is the largest phylum of Fungi, with over 64,000 species. Pezizomycotina
Pezizomycotina make up most of the Ascomycota fungi and include most lichenized fungi too. Pezizomycotina contains the filamentous ascomycetes and is a subdivision of the Ascomycota (fungi that form their spores in a sac-like ''ascus''). It is more or less synonymous with the older taxon Euascomycota. These fungi reproduce by fission rather than budding and this subdivision includes almost all the ascus fungi that have fruiting bodies visible to the naked eye (exception: genus ''Neolecta'', which belongs to the Taphrinomycotina). Midgley () is a hill-top village in Calderdale, West Yorkshire, England. It is situated approximately east from Burnley and west-north-west of Halifax, and just north of the A646 road. Nearby villages are Mytholmroyd to the west-south-west, and Hebden Bridge to the west-north-west. The village is part of the Luddendenfoot ward of the Metropolitan borough of Calderdale, part of the Metropolitan county of West Yorkshire.
