Baseball In The United Kingdom
Baseball is a growing, minor sport in the United Kingdom, with an estimated 22,500 people playing in 2020. The sport is governed by the British Baseball Federation, which runs a multi-tier national league. There are also independent regional leagues, and around 20 universities field teams currently in existence. At various times in history professionalism has existed, most notably the 1890 National League of Baseball of Great Britain. In 1938 the Great Britain national baseball team won the Baseball World Cup, and were runners-up in the 1967 and 2007 European Baseball Championship. They have also qualified for the finals of the 2023 World Baseball Classic. As of 2020 Great Britain competed internationally at under 12, under 15, under 18, under 23 and senior levels. British Baseball Federation
The British Baseball Federation (BBF) is the national governing body of baseball within the United Kingdom. Organised modern baseball has been played in the United Kingdom since the first baseball league began in 1890, with a succession of different governing bodies in place over that time. The BBF was founded in 1987. The BBF is a federated member of both the Confederation of European Baseball and the International Baseball Federation. Until December 2020, the BBF was a joint member (with the British Softball Federation) of BaseballSoftballUK (BSUK), a sports development agency. Danny Cox (baseball)
Daniel Bradford Cox (born 21 September 1959) is an English born American former professional baseball pitcher, who played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the St. Louis Cardinals (1983–1988), the Philadelphia Phillies (1991–1992), the Pittsburgh Pirates (1992), and the Toronto Blue Jays (1993–1995), after which he retired from active play. Danny Cox was born in Northampton, Northamptonshire, where his father was stationed while serving in the United States Air Force. When he was two, Cox and his family moved back to the United States. Trevor Hoffman
Trevor William Hoffman (born October 13, 1967) is an American former professional baseball relief pitcher who played 18 years in Major League Baseball (MLB) from 1993 to 2010. A long-time closer, he pitched for the Florida Marlins, San Diego Padres, and Milwaukee Brewers, including more than 15 years for the Padres. Hoffman was the major leagues' first player to reach the 500- and 600- save milestones, and was the all-time saves leader from 2006 until 2011. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2018. Hoffman currently serves as senior advisor for baseball operations for the Padres. Hoffman played shortstop collegiately at the University of Arizona and was drafted in the 11th round by the Cincinnati Reds. He assembled, managed, and played center field for baseball's first fully professional team, the 1869 Cincinnati Red Stockings.
