Bukovec Mountains
The Bukovec Mountains ( sk, Bukovské vrchy; hu, Ungi-határhegység) is a flysch mountain range in north-eastern Slovakia, part of the Eastern Beskids of the Outer Eastern Carpathians. It is located in the Prešov Region near the borders with Poland (Bieszczady Mountains) and Ukraine, and adjacent to the Laborec Highlands. The highest mountain is at 1,221 m AMSL. Original flora and fauna was preserved because of the area's remoteness. The mountain range is covered with beech forests. The area is protected by Poloniny National Park. Prešov Region
The Prešov Region, also Priashiv Region ( sk, Prešovský kraj, ; hu, Eperjesi kerület; uk, Пряшівський край) is one of the eight Slovak administrative regions and consists of 13 districts (okresy) and 666 municipalities, 23 of which have town status. The region was established in 1996 and is the most populous of all the regions in Slovakia. Its administrative center is the city of Prešov. Lower Beskids
The Low Beskids ( sk, Nízke Beskydy) or Central Beskids ( pl, Beskidy Środkowe; cs, Centrální Beskydy; uk, Центральні Бескиди) are a mountain range in southeastern Poland and northeastern Slovakia. They constitute a middle (central) section of the Beskids, within the Outer Eastern Carpathians. Since there are several traditional divisions of the ''Beskid Mountains'' in general, this particular region has also been classified by different designations. In Slovak terminology, the region is called ''Low Beskids'' ( sk, Nízke Beskydy). Flysch
Flysch () is a sequence of sedimentary rock layers that progress from deep-water and turbidity flow deposits to shallow-water shales and sandstones. It is deposited when a deep basin forms rapidly on the continental side of a mountain building episode. Examples are found near the North American Cordillera, the Alps, the Pyrenees and the Carpathians. Sedimentological properties Flysch consists of repeated sedimentary cycles with upwards fining of the sediments. There are sometimes coarse conglomerates or breccias at the bottom of each cycle, which gradually evolve upwards into sandstone and shale/mudstone. Flysch typically consists of a sequence of shales rhythmically interbedded with thin, hard, graywacke-like sandstones. Bieszczady Mountains
Bieszczady Mountains ( pl, Bieszczady; sk, Beščady; uk, Бещади; hu, Besszádok) is a mountain range that runs from the extreme south-east of Poland and north-east of Slovakia through to western Ukraine. Laborec Highlands
The Laborec Highlands (in Slovak, ''Laborecká vrchovina'') is a mountain range in northeastern Slovakia, part of the Lower Beskids of the Outer Eastern Carpathians. The range is composed of Carpathian flysch. Bordered in the north by the Polish national border and to the west by the Ondavská Highlands, its ridges typically reach a height of 500 to 700 metres. Poloniny National Park
Poloniny National Park ( sk, Národný park Poloniny) is a national park in northeastern Slovakia at the Polish and Ukrainian borders, in the Bukovské vrchy mountain range, which belongs to the Eastern Carpathians. It was created on 1 October 1997 with a protected area of and a buffer zone of . Selected areas of the park are included into Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians UNESCO World Heritage Site. Stužica
Stužica is a uniquely preserved and undisturbed primeval beech forest of the Outer Eastern Carpathians. It is located in Slovakia and borders with Poland and Ukraine. The forest has been protected since 1908 and in 1993 the area was upgraded to a National Nature Reserve. In 2007 Stužica and several other locations in the range, including six components in Ukraine, were declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Five German components were added in 2011.
