Bohumil Kučera (1874–1921)
Bohumil Kučera (March 22, 1874 in Semily – April 16, 1921 in Prague) was a Czech physicist. Biography Kučera studied physics at the Charles University in Prague and was the first scientist in Czech lands to examine the newly discovered effect of radioactivity. In 1912 he became professor of experimental physics at the university. He was the first to study droplets of mercury used as electrode (author of ''Zur Oberflächenspannung von polarisiertem Quecksilber'', 1903). His work was the basis for the discovery of polarography by Jaroslav Heyrovský. Semily (; german: Semil) is a town in the Liberec Region of the Czech Republic. It has about 8,100 inhabitants. Polarography
Polarography is a type of voltammetry where the working electrode is a dropping mercury electrode (DME) or a static mercury drop electrode (SMDE), which are useful for their wide cathodic ranges and renewable surfaces. It was invented in 1922 by Czechs, Czech chemist Jaroslav Heyrovský, for which he won the Nobel prize in 1959. Jaroslav Heyrovský () (December 20, 1890 – March 27, 1967) was a Czech chemist and inventor. Heyrovský was the inventor of the polarographic method, father of the electroanalytical method, and recipient of the Nobel Prize in 1959 for his discovery and development of the polarographic methods of analysis. His main field of work was polarography.
