Bishweshwar Nandi
Bishweshwar Nandi is an Indian gymnastics coach.The need is to make kids start gymnastics at a young age: Bishweshwar Nandi, written by Nitin Sharma, 17 February 2018, The Indian Express. He was also a prolific gymnast himself. He was trained by Dalip Singh. Nandi had been five times National Champion in gymnastics, represented the country in 12 instances and led the Indian gymnastics team six times as captain. He won Dronacharya Award in 2016 for his outstanding contribution to Indian gymnastics as a coach. Dipa Karmakar is one of the most successful students of Nandi. His wife, Soma Nandi, is also a gymnastics coach. Nandi was born in a Bengali family in Tripura, India. Dronacharya Award
The Dronacharya Award, officially known as Dronacharya Award for Outstanding Coaches in Sports and Games, is sports coaching honour of the Republic of India. The award is named after Drona, often referred as "Dronacharya" or "Guru Drona", a character from the Sanskrit epic ''Mahabharata'' of ancient India. He was master of advanced military warfare and was appointed as the royal preceptor to the Kaurava and the Pandava princes for their training in military arts and astras (Divine weapons). It is awarded annually by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. Recipients are selected by a committee constituted by the Ministry and are honoured to have done "outstanding and meritorious work on a consistent basis and enabled sportspersons to excel in international events" over a period of four years. Gymnastics
Gymnastics is a type of sport that includes physical exercises requiring balance, strength, flexibility, agility, coordination, dedication and endurance. The movements involved in gymnastics contribute to the development of the arms, legs, shoulders, back, chest, and abdominal muscle groups. Dalip Singh (gymnastics Coach)
Dalip Singh, also spelt as Duleep Singh, (–16 October 1987) was an Indian gymnastics coach from Haryana. His main training centre was Vivekananda Byamagar, Agartala. Gymnastics began in Tripura at that centre under the supervision of Singh, who began working in Agartala in 1964. His notable students included Mantu Debnath, Bharat Kishore Debbarman, Kalpana Debnath, Bishweshwar Nandi, and others. Biography Dalip Singh was from a family of farmers in Haryana. He was an Indian Army sports instructor. In the mid-sixties, he was deputed to Agartala to scout for gymnastics talent. He had been trained by Russian gymnast at Patiala's National Institute of Sports (now Netaji Subhash National Institute of Sports) run by Sports Authority of India. During his visit to Agartala, he married a Manipuri doctor, Sushila Devi, in 1969 and stayed on in Tripura, having decided to work towards turning the state into the gymnastics field. Dipa Karmakar
Dipa Karmakar (born 9 August 1993) is an Indian Gymnast from Tripura State. She is the first gymnast of India who competed in the Olympics. In her debut 2016 Summer Olympics, in the final she reached till 4th position. At the Rio Olympics, she lost an Olympic medal by just 0.15 points; due to her historic achievement at Rio Olympic, she became a well known Gymnast as well as a face of gymnastics in India. In the final she performed a difficult Prodonova vault and completed against worlds' top Gymnasts such as Simone Biles of United States, Maria Paseka and Giulia Steingrubber, who won Gold, Silver and Bronze medal respectively. Karmakar first gained attention when she won a bronze medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, becoming the first Indian female gymnast to do so in the history of the Games. Gymnastics In India
Gymnastics came of age in India, when at the 2010 Commonwealth Games, Ashish Kumar won the first-ever medal in gymnastics, he won a bronze medal. However, soon after the win, the President of the Gymnastics Federation of India asked Ashish's Chief Coach from the Soviet Union, Vladimir Chertkov: "Is this all that you can deliver, a bronze?" The comment was widely reported in the press. Later, the coach revealed that "In August 2009, we had no equipment. Ashish trained on hard floor till February 2010, and then we got equipment around 20 years old." Also, the Federation announced that no Indian team would travel to Rotterdam for the World Championships in October, which meant that Indian gymnasts automatically would not qualify as a team for the 2012 Summer Olympics.
