Bates Township is a civil township of Iron County in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the township population was 1,021. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of , of which is land and (4.49%) is water. Demographics As of the census of 2000, there were 1,021 people, 437 households, and 301 families residing in the township. The population density was 8.1 per square mile (3.1/km2). There were 803 housing units at an average density of 6.4 per square mile (2.5/km2). The racial makeup of the township was 97.36% White, 0.10% African American, 1.57% Native American, 0.10% Asian, 0.20% from other races, and 0.69% from two or more races.
