Baird is a settlement and former railway station in the township of Oliver Paipoonge in the Canadian province of Ontario. It was formerly served by the Lake Superior Branch of the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway, but the GTP line from near Conmee, Ontario to Fort William, Ontario Fort William was a city in Ontario, Canada, located on the Kaministiquia River, at its entrance to Lake Superior. Oliver Paipoonge is a township in the Canadian province of Ontario, located directly west of the city of Thunder Bay. The municipality was formed on January 1, 1998, with the amalgamation of the former Township of Oliver and Township of Paipoonge. It contains several communities within its boundaries, including Baird, Carters Corners, Harstone, Kakabeka Falls, Lee, McCluskeys Corners, Millar, Murillo, Rosslyn, Slate River Valley, Stanley and Twin City. The remainder of the municipality is agricultural or rural. The municipality is part of Thunder Bay's Census Metropolitan Area. Grand Trunk Pacific Railway
The Grand Trunk Pacific Railway was a historic Canadian transcontinental railway running from Fort William, Ontario (now Thunder Bay) to Prince Rupert, British Columbia, a Pacific coast port. East of Winnipeg the line continued as the National Transcontinental Railway (NTR), running across northern Ontario and Quebec, crossing the St. Lawrence River at Quebec City and ending at Moncton, New Brunswick. The Grand Trunk Railway (GTR) managed and operated the entire line. Largely constructed 1907–14, the GTPR operated 1914–19, prior to nationalization as the Canadian National Railway (CNR). Despite poor decision-making by the various levels of government and the railway management, the GTPR established local employment opportunities, a telegraph service, and freight, passenger and mail transportation. Conmee, Ontario
Conmee is a township (Canada), township in the Canada, Canadian province of Ontario, located within the Thunder Bay District, Ontario, Thunder Bay District. The township was named after James Conmee (October 13, 1848 – July 23, 1913 - an Ontario businessman and political figure) and is part of the city of Thunder Bay's Census Metropolitan Area. Its main named settlements were the communities of Mokomon and Hume, now historical footnotes in Conmee's development. Conmee Township was home to a Summer solstice, Summer Solstice festival during the late 1960s and throughout the 1970s. Fort William was a city in Ontario, Canada, located on the Kaministiquia River, at its entrance to Lake Superior.
