Baillieston ( sco, Bailiestoun) is a suburb of Glasgow, Scotland. It is about east of the city centre. It also gives its name to Ward 20 of Glasgow City Council and forms part of the Glasgow East constituency of the UK Parliament. Geographical position Once a separate village, Baillieston is now on the periphery of the Glasgow urban area, situated west of a major interchange between the M8, M74 and M73 motorways and the A8 trunk road, between the town of Coatbridge in North Lanarkshire, and the neighbouring Glasgow neighbourhoods of Sandyhills, Barlanark and Mount Vernon. Suburban developments in the vicinity such as Barrachnie, Garrowhill, Springhill and Swinton are generally considered to fall within the larger modern Baillieston district. Mount Vernon is a residential area in the east end of the city of Glasgow, Scotland. It directly borders Sandyhills and Foxley to the west, while Barlanark is the closest neighbourhood to the north, Barrachnie and Baillieston to the east and Carmyle to the south, although Mount Vernon is separated from these by areas of open land, including Early Braes public park and the former Kenmuir farm. Bannerman High School is a state secondary school in the Baillieston suburb of Glasgow, Scotland. Easterhouse
Easterhouse is a suburb of Glasgow, Scotland, east of the city centre on land gained from the county of Lanarkshire as part of an expansion of Glasgow before the Second World War. The area is on high ground north of the River Clyde and south of the River Kelvin and Campsie Fells. Building began in the mid-1950s to provide better housing for people in the East End living in sub-standard conditions. At the 2001 Census, its population was 26,495. Neighbourhoods of Easterhouse include Provanhall, Kildermorie, Lochend, Rogerfield and Commonhead, as well as Wellhouse, Easthall and Queenslie which are separated from the other parts by the M8 motorway running east–west through the area. Monkland Canal
The Monkland Canal was a canal designed to bring coal from the mining areas of Monklands to Glasgow in Scotland. In the course of a long and difficult construction process, it was opened progressively as short sections were completed, from 1771. It reached Gartcraig in 1782, and in 1794 it reached its full originally planned extent, from pits at Calderbank to a basin at Townhead in Glasgow; at first this was in two sections with a vertical interval between them at Blackhill; coal was unloaded and carted to the lower section and loaded onto a fresh barge. Locks were later constructed linking the two sections, and the canal was also connected to the Forth and Clyde Canal, giving additional business potential. Maintaining an adequate water supply was a problem, and later an inclined plane was built at Blackhill, in which barges were let down and hauled up, floating in caissons that ran on rails. Broomhouse ( sco, Bruimhoose) is a residential area in Glasgow, Scotland. It is about east of the city centre. Historically a small mining village and later the site of the Glasgow Zoo, in the early 21st century it grew substantially as an affluent commuter suburb. Although close to Baillieston and within the Glasgow boundaries, the neighbourhood has a G71 postcode which has often led to it being associated with Uddingston, the main town for that district which is about to the south-east in the South Lanarkshire local authority area. Baillieston Railway Station
Baillieston railway station is located in Caledonia Road on the southern boundary of the Baillieston area of Glasgow, Scotland, with the Broomhouse area on the other side of the tracks. It is on the Whifflet Line (a branch of the more extensive Argyle Line), east of Glasgow Central railway station. Train services are provided by ScotRail. The line was built in the period 1864-1866 by the Caledonian Railway and was called the Rutherglen to Coatbridge branch. Swinton, Glasgow
Swinton is an eastern suburb of the Scottish city of Glasgow, north of the areas of Baillieston and Garrowhill and east of Springhill. It is now concurrent with the 19th century Easterhouse village (whereas the large housing scheme of the same name lies across the M8 motorway to the north of Swinton). The hamlet of Swinton began to emerge with the building of cotton hand loom weavers' cottages in the early 1790s. A housing development was constructed in the 1920s, Virtual Mitchell with more in the 1970s, but most of the current neighbourhood was built from the 1990s onwards. |
