Harriet Backer
Harriet Backer (21 January 1845 – 25 March 1932) was a Norwegian painter who achieved recognition in her own time and was a pioneer among female artists both in the Nordic countries and in Europe generally. She is best known for her detailed interior scenes, communicated with rich colors and the interplay of light and shadow. Biography Backer was one of four daughters born to an affluent family at Holmestrand in Vestfold, Norway. Her parents were Nils Backer (1815–1877) and Sofie Smith Petersen (1819–1882), and she was the aunt of the painter Astri Welhaven Heiberg (1881–1967). Her father was a shipping merchant and her mother was from a wealthy family. Her family moved to Christiania (Oslo) in 1856. Cornelis Andries Backer
Cornelis Andries Backer (1874–1963) was a Dutch botanist and pteridologist. He was born on 18 September 1874 in Oudenbosch and died on 22 February 1963 at Heemstede, The Netherlands. He stayed thirty years in the Dutch East Indies and did research on plant taxonomy on the islands of Java and Madura. Jacob Adriaensz Backer
Jacob Adriaensz Backer (1608 – 27 August 1651) was a Dutch Golden Age painter. He produced about 140 paintings in twenty years, including portraits, religious subjects, and mythological paintings. In his style, he was influenced by Wybrand de Geest, Rubens and Abraham Bloemaert. He is also noted for his drawings of male and female nudes. Biography Backer was born in Harlingen, Netherlands, but his father moved in 1611 to Amsterdam, after his wife died. The family lived on Nieuwendijk near the harbour. Between 1627 and 1633 he and Govert Flinck, both Mennonites, were pupils of Lambert Jacobsz in Leeuwarden, a mennonite teacher, father of Abraham Lambertsz van den Tempel, painter of religious work, and after moving to Amsterdam, a neighbor. Lars Thalian Backer (5 January 1892 – 7 June 1930) was a Norwegian architect. Backer was a pioneer of modernism in Norwegian architecture during the 1920s. Biography Backer was born in Oslo, Norway. His parents were Herman Major Backer (1856–1932) and Elisabeth Christiane Boeck (1868–1958). His father was also a noted architect whose work included St. John's Church in Bergen and Villa Fridheim in Krødsherad. Backer was educated at the Oslo National Academy of the Arts under the supervision of Herman Major Schirmer and the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, from which he graduated in 1915. Deborah Backer (14 April 1959 – 21 March 2014) was a Guyanese politician of the People's National Congress who served as the deputy speaker of the National Assembly of Guyana. Early life Born on 14 April 1959, Backer received her LLB degree from University of the West Indies, Barbados in 1981 and attended the Hugh Wooding Law School for her legal education certificate. Marijn Backer
Marinus Franciscus Johannes "Marijn" Backer (born 6 September 1956) is a Dutch educator, poet, and writer. Backer has been publishing poetry, including in translation, at least since 1986. In 1992 he won the Zilveren Griffel prize with Inez van Eijk for his first children's book ''Lieve engerd, de groeten''. Backer has been publishing youth literature ever since and occasionally engages in nonfiction. His poems are still published on his website. Augustin de Backer (18 July 1809 in Antwerp, Belgium – 1 December 1873 in Liège, Belgium) was a Belgian Jesuit and renowned bibliographer. Early years and Formation De Backer left his country to be educated at the Jesuit schools of France (Beauregard, College of Saint-Acheul, Saint-Acheul) and Switzerland Fribourg. After schooling, and rather than going to the university, he undertook to visit libraries of France and Belgium in search of books printed by Plantin Press, Plantin. In 1835, he was received into the Society of Jesus (in Rome) by the Superior General, Father Jan Roothaan, John-Baptist Roothaan, who sent him back to Nivelles, in Belgium, for his novitiate (29 June 1835).
