Brad Backer
Brad Backer (born 19 July 1956) is an Australian former rugby league footballer who played in the 1980s. Primarily a er, he was a member of the inaugural Queensland State of Origin team and won two premierships with the Easts Tigers. Playing career A Maryborough junior, Backer played for Western Suburbs Bundaberg before moving to Brisbane to join the Easts Tigers. In 1978, he started on the wing in Easts' 14–10 BRL Grand Final win over the Fortitude Valley Diehards. In 1979, he was selected for Queensland in the interstate series. In 1980, he started on the wing for Queensland in the inaugural State of Origin game. He represented Queensland the following two years in State of Origin, scoring a try in their 1981 win over New South Wales. In 1983, Backer won his second BRL premiership for Easts, defeating the Redcliffe Dolphins in the Grand Final. Maryborough ( ) is a city and a suburb in the Fraser Coast Region, Queensland, Australia. At the 2021 Census, Maryborough had a population of 15,287. Geography Maryborough is located on the Mary River in Queensland, Australia, approximately north of the state capital, Brisbane. The city is served by the Bruce Highway. 1981 Rugby League State Of Origin Game
The 1981 State of Origin game was the second such match between arch rivals Queensland and New South Wales to be played under State of Origin selection rules. Again it was played as the third game of an already-decided 3-game series. New South Wales' victories in the first two games under the "state of residency" selection rules were, however, the last matches of this kind to ever be played as the following year the Origin concept was fully embraced. The match featured a stunning comeback by the Maroons, an all-in-brawl, a 95-metre try by Eric Grothe, Sr. and the second consecutive man-of-the-match performance from Queensland centre, Chris Close. Redcliffe Dolphins
The Redcliffe Dolphins are a semi-professional rugby league club based in Redcliffe, Queensland, Redcliffe, Queensland, Australia. Founded in 1947, they were accepted into the Brisbane Rugby League premiership (rugby league competition), Brisbane Rugby League (BRL) premiership competition in 1960, and since 1996 have played in the Queensland Cup. The Redcliffe Dolphins thrived in the BRL. However, the 1988 admission of the Brisbane Broncos team in the National Rugby League, National Rugby League (NRL) competition caused the decline of the BRL. Although a separately licensed Dolphins (NRL) team is scheduled to compete in the fully professional 2023 national competition, the Redcliffe squad will continue to play in the Queensland competition. The State of Origin series is an annual best-of-three rugby league series between two Australian state representative sides, the New South Wales Blues and the Queensland Maroons.
