Marijn Backer
Marinus Franciscus Johannes "Marijn" Backer (born 6 September 1956) is a Dutch educator, poet, and writer. Backer has been publishing poetry, including in translation, at least since 1986. In 1992 he won the Zilveren Griffel prize with Inez van Eijk for his first children's book ''Lieve engerd, de groeten''. Backer has been publishing youth literature ever since and occasionally engages in nonfiction. His poems are still published on his website. Two of Backer's books have been published in German translation. His poems were published in 18 languages. Backer is a dean and a teacher of Greek and Latin at the Werkplaats Kindergemeenschap. He is an author of the teaching method ''Fortuna'' for Latin. In the 2000s, he wrote a biweekly column on education for ''NRC Handelsblad''. Leiden
Leiden (; in English and archaic Dutch also Leyden) is a city and municipality in the province of South Holland, Netherlands. The municipality of Leiden has a population of 119,713, but the city forms one densely connected agglomeration with its suburbs Oegstgeest, Leiderdorp, Voorschoten and Zoeterwoude with 206,647 inhabitants. The Netherlands Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) further includes Katwijk in the agglomeration which makes the total population of the Leiden urban agglomeration 270,879, and in the larger Leiden urban area also Teylingen, Noordwijk, and Noordwijkerhout are included with in total 348,868 inhabitants. Leiden is located on the Oude Rijn, at a distance of some from The Hague to its south and some from Amsterdam to its north. Claus Bock
Claus Victor Bock (7 May 1926 – 5 January 2008) was a professor of German studies. In the early 1950s, Bock studied with Ronald Peacock at the University of Manchester, attracted by the latter's research on Hölderlin, and obtained a PhD at Basle under Walter Muschg. After working briefly as an assistant lecturer at his alma mater, he became a lecturer at Queen Mary College, London (1958), then reader (1964), and finally professor of German, Westfield College, London (1969). Gouden Zoen
The Gouden Griffel (Golden Stylus) is an award given to authors of children's or teenagers' literature in the Netherlands. History Since 1971, it is awarded each year during the Dutch Children's Books Week, by the Stichting Collectieve Propaganda van het Nederlandse Boek (Dutch Book Promotion Society) for the best children's books written in the past year. Between 1954 and 1970, one book per year was declared the "children's book of the year". Since then, ''griffels'' are awarded in several categories. Only novels written in Dutch are eligible for the ''gouden griffel''. However, the runner-up awards (Silver ''griffels'') can also be given to translated works. Aside from these, the ''Gouden Penseel'' (golden paintbrush) is awarded to the best illustrated children's books (with silver ''penseel'' as a runner-up), and since 1997 the Gouden Zoen (golden kiss, with silver as a runner-up) is awarded to the best books for teenagers. Gouden Uil
The Golden Book-Owl (De Gouden Boekenuil) is a Belgian prize for original Dutch language literature. Originally it was named Golden Owl (De Gouden Uil). It has been awarded annually since 1995. Development It has changed categories several times during the years. For the first five years it consisted of three columns: Fiction, non-fiction and children and youth books. As for 2000 to 2008 the non-fiction category was replaced by an audience award. In 2009 and 2010 it had even four categories: Literature, Youth Literature, Audience and Youth Audience. Since 2012 it is reduced to grown up literature prizes. The winner gets 25,000 euro and a work of art, the winner of the 100 reader's prize gets 2,500 euro and a MontBlanc pen.
