August 23 Artillery Battle Museum
The August 23 Artillery Battle Museum () is a museum in Zhongzheng Park, Jinhu Township, Kinmen, Taiwan. History The museum was built in 1988 to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the 23 August 1958 Artillery War during the Second Taiwan Strait Crisis. Architecture On both sides of the museum main entrance are carved the names of the 587 ROC armed forces servicemen who lost their lives in the bombardment. On the left side are displayed the main air fighter used by the forces at that time and the main artillery piece. On the right side is one of the amphibious landing craft which played a vital role in transporting troops and materials during the battle. The museum building is surrounded by banyan trees. Exhibitions The museum exhibits historical artifacts in 12 display areas for charts, photographs, documents, relics and models. Jinhu, Kinmen
Jinhu Township () is an urban township of Kinmen (Quemoy), Fujian Province, Republic of China (Taiwan). It is in the Taiwan Strait, on the coast of mainland China. Jinhu Township is the largest township in Kinmen County. History On July 1, 1953, Canghu Township () was renamed Jinhu Township (), a rural township. In December 1957, Jinhu was changed back into an urban township. In 1959, Jinqiong Township () was created from the two villages Zhengyi and Qionglin. On September 16, 1965, Jinqiong Township was disbanded and the major part of the two villages returned to Jinhu Township. Geography It has a population of 27,368 and an area of . The township includes Dongding Island, Beiding Island, and other small islets. Kinmen
Kinmen, alternatively known as Quemoy, is a group of islands governed as a county by the Republic of China (Taiwan), off the southeastern coast of mainland China. It lies roughly east of the city of Xiamen in Fujian, from which it is separated by Xiamen Bay. Kinmen is located west from the shoreline of the island of Taiwan across the Taiwan Strait. Second Taiwan Strait Crisis
The Second Taiwan Strait Crisis, also called the 1958 Taiwan Strait Crisis, was a conflict that took place between the People's Republic of China (PRC) and the Republic of China (ROC). In this conflict, the PRC shelled the islands of Kinmen (Quemoy) and the Matsu Islands along the east coast of mainland China (in the Taiwan Strait) to "liberate" Taiwan from the Chinese Nationalist Party, also known as the Kuomintang (KMT); and to probe the extent of the United States defense of Taiwan's territory. A naval battle also took place around Dongding Island when the ROC Navy repelled an attempted amphibious landing by the PRC Navy.
