Artsakh Basketball Club, is a professional basketball team based in Yerevan, Armenia. It was originally founded in 2017 in Stepanakert; the capital of the unrecognized Republic of Artsakh, as the basketball section of Artsakh FC, a Yerevan-based football club. Artsakh BC is a founding member of the Armenia Basketball League A. History On 22 October 2017, the founder of Artsakh FC ''Sevan Aslanyan'', agreed to create a basketball section with the aim to play in the newly created Armenia Basketball League A, with Areg Vatyan becoming the sporting director of the basketball section, and Andrey Sarumyan becoming the head coach of the team. Bako Sahakyan, president of the unrecognized Republic of Artsakh, attended their first home league match, played in Stepanakert, the Republic's capital. The Armenia Basketball League A (Armenian: ), is the top men's official basketball league in Armenia. The first season of the competition was launched in 2017. Since 2019, it has been renamed the VBET A-League after a headline sponsorship agreement with the Armenian gambling operator VBET. History After the creation of the Armenia national basketball team, the Basketball Federation of Armenia decided to establish the new League A for training new players for the national team. Mika Sports Arena ( hy, Միկա Մարզադահլիճ), is a multi-purpose sports arena located in the Shengavit District of Yerevan, the capital of Armenia. It has a capacity of 1,200 spectators. The arena was constructed in 2009 by the Mika Corporation Ltd., the owners of the currently-defunct football club Mika FC. It is located near the Mika Stadium. Artsakh, officially the Republic of Artsakh () or the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic (),, is a list of states with limited recognition, breakaway state in the South Caucasus whose territory is internationally recognised as part of Azerbaijan. Bako Sahaki Sahakyan ( hy, Բակո Սահակի Սահակյան; born 30 August 1960) is an Artsakhi politician who served as the third president of the ''de facto''-independent Republic of Artsakh from 2007 to 2020. He is the longest-serving president of Artsakh. He was first elected as President on 19 July 2007. The 2017–18 Armenia Basketball League A season, was the inaugural season of the new official competition of basketball first division in Armenia. Artsakh won the title after doing a perfect 6–0 in the playoffs. Competition format After several negotiations, finally seven teams joined the competition, consisting in a round-robin tournament where the best teams would qualify for the playoffs. The best teams are able for qualifying to the European competitions. The regular season consisted in a double-legged round-robin tournament where the first qualified would join directly the semifinals. The other six teams would face in the quarterfinals.
