Avodah (Yom Kippur)
The ''Avodah'' () is an essential part of the Mussaf service of Yom Kippur, based upon the detailed account given in the Mishnah Yoma of the sacrificial service performed by the High Priest in the Temple at Jerusalem. Background The basis for this elaborate function is found in Leviticus 16. Originally this part of the service seems to have consisted only in the recital of the Mishnah treatise, Yoma. Gradually it was further elaborated, and became the most solemn and impressive portion of the Yom Kippur service. The ''Avodah'' usually begins with a prayer for the synagogue reader, followed by a cursory review of the Biblical history from Adam down to Aaron. 'Abodah
''Avoda'', or ''Avodah'' (), literally means "work, worship, and service" in Hebrew. In a modern context, usually referring to business-type activities, it can also mean agricultural work and, more traditionally, serving God. Original meaning In its original, traditional sense, ''avodah'' was applied to sacrifices offered in the Temple in Jerusalem. The word was also used to describe the epitome of sacrificial rite, the complex and fraught main service of the High Priest on Yom Kippur (The Day of Atonement). Confession (Judaism)
In Judaism, confession ( he, וִדּוּי, vīddūy) is a step in the process of atonement during which a Jew admits to committing a sin before God. In sins between a Jew and God, the confession must be done without others present (The Talmud calls confession in front of another a show of disrespect). On the other hand, confession pertaining to sins done to another person are permitted to be done publicly, and in fact Maimonides calls such confession "immensely praiseworthy". Minhag Polin/Minhag Lita (Polish/Lithuanian/Prague rite) is the Ashkenazi minhag of the Polish Jews, the Polish/Lithuanian or Eastern branch of Nusach Ashkenaz, used in Eastern Europe, the United States and by some Israeli Ashkenazim, particularly those who identify as " Lithuanian".
