Arne Meidell

He was born in Oslo, Kristiania as a son of barrister Kristian Garup Meidell (1866–1926) and Kristine Marie Birkeland (1871–1958). He was a maternal grandson of Supreme Court Justice Laurits Birkeland. In 1918 he married Danish pharmacist's daughter Asta Trojel (1896–1984). He examen artium, finished his education at Frogner School in 1912, and graduated from the University of Oslo, Royal Frederick University with the cand.jur. degree in 1916. After graduation, he was a junior solicitor, then from 1925 a barrister with access to Supreme Court of Norway, Supreme Court cases. By then he had already become a business leader. In 1922 he was hired as manager of Lilleborg Fabriker, advancing to chief executive officer in 1929. Kristian Garup Meidell
Kristian Garup Meidell, sometimes just Garup Meidell (8 May 1866 – 25 July 1926) was a Norwegian barrister. He was born in Nes i Hallingdal as a son of district stipendiary magistrate Frants Henrik Meidell and Olivia Annette Caroline Arntzen. In 1893 he married Kristine Marie Birkeland, a daughter of Supreme Court Justice Laurits Birkeland. Their son Arne Meidell became a known industrial leader. Another son, Frants, followed in his father's footsteps as a barrister. Garup Meidell finished his secondary education in 1885 and graduated from the Royal Frederick University with the cand.jur. degree in 1890. He worked under his father before settling as an attorney in Kristiania in 1893. From 1896 he was a barrister with access to working with Supreme Court cases. Among others he worked as a lawyer for the Central Bank of Norway, and at his death he was described as one of the "best known jurists" in Norway's capital. Sulitjelma Gruber
Sulitjelma Mines ( no, Sulitjelma gruber) was a Norwegian mining company that extracted copper, pyrite, and zinc at Sulitjelma in the municipality of Fauske, Norway. Operations started with a test mine in 1887. From 1891 to 1933, the business was registered as a Swedish company called ''Sulitelma Aktiebolags Gruber''. From 1933 to 1983, it was registered as a Norwegian company called ''A/S Sulitjelma Gruber'', and from 1983 until it was shut down in 1991 the company was state-owned and was named ''Sulitjelma Bergverk AS''. Chalcopyrite was found by the Sami Mons Andreas Petersen around 1858, but due to the very remote location of the place there was skepticism that the deposits could be commercially viable. It was only when the Swedish industrialist and consul Nils Persson gained interest in the ore deposits in 1886 that progress was made in developing mining in Sulitelma. Order Of Vasa
The Royal Order of Vasa () is a Swedish order of chivalry, awarded to citizens of Sweden for service to state and society especially in the fields of agriculture, mining and commerce. It was instituted on 29 May 1772 by King Gustav III. It was unrestricted by birth or education and could therefore be awarded to anyone (as opposed to the Order of the Polar Star, which was intended as a reward for the learned professions). It was the most junior of all the Swedish orders. It was often awarded to Norwegian subjects of the dual monarchy until Oscar I founded the Norwegian Order of St. Olav in 1847. Since 1974 the order is no longer conferred: officially it has been declared as "dormant", along with the Order of the Sword. Order Of The Dannebrog
The Order of the Dannebrog ( da, Dannebrogordenen) is a Danish order of chivalry instituted in 1671 by Christian V. Until 1808, membership in the order was limited to fifty members of noble or royal rank, who formed a single class known as ''White Knights'' to distinguish them from the ''Blue Knights'' who were members of the Order of the Elephant. In 1808, the Order was reformed and divided into four classes. The ''Grand Commander'' class is reserved to persons of princely origin. It is awarded only to royalty with close family ties with the Danish Royal House. The statute of the Order was amended in 1951 by a Royal Ordinance so that both men and women could be members of the Order. Today, the Order of the Dannebrog is a means of honouring and rewarding the faithful servants of the modern Danish state for meritorious civil or military service, for a particular contribution to the arts, sciences or business life, or for working for Danish interests. ''Merkantilt biografisk leksikon: hvem er hvem i næringslivet?'' ( en, Mercantile Biographical Encyclopedia: Who is Who in the Enterprise?) was a Norwegian-language encyclopedia published by Yrkesforlaget in 1935. It featured approximately 10,000 short biographical entries for Norwegian businesspeople, and was edited by Einar Hoffstad (1894–1959). It was printed by Grøndahl & Søns Boktrykkeri. The purpose of the encyclopedia was to "remedy the need to know something about the individuals one is trading with". The entries contain little genealogical information, and the parents of the portrayed businesspeople are not included. Abbreviations are used extensively to save space and money. The editor, Einar Hoffstad, stated in the foreword of the encyclopedia that it was not a parallel to the '' Who's Who'' reference works, although the title could imply that. A consul is an official representative of the government of one state in the territory of another, normally acting to assist and protect the citizens of the consul's own country, as well as to facilitate trade and friendship between the people of the two countries. A consul is distinguished from an ambassador, the latter being a representative from one head of state to another, but both have a form of immunity. Norwegian Red Cross
The Norwegian Red Cross (''Norges Røde Kors'') was founded on 22 September 1865 by prime minister Frederik Stang. In 1895 the Norwegian Red Cross began educating nurses, and in 1907 the Norwegian Ministry of Defence authorized the organization for voluntary medical aid in war. The Norwegian Red Cross was one of the first national organizations in the International Red Cross. The organization now has 150,000 members and provides a variety of humanitarian services, including care for old and the infirm, prisoner visits, outdoor rescue, and international work. SK Fram (Oslo)
Skiklubben Fram was a Norwegian skiing club, based in Oslo but with its sporting facilities in Vestre Aker—and from 1902 to 1923 in Oppland. Fram was founded in 1889, and after a down period around 1900 it was refurbished as an exclusive gentlemen's social club in a skiing setting. Early years, 1889–c.1900 The club was founded on 24 November 1889 at Framnæs near Skillebekk, whence the Fearnley family had moved here the same year. The club was named after the property and is thus one of very few Norwegian sports clubs named Fram not to derive its name from Nansen's vessel. The founders were ten young boys; Harald Andresen, N.
