Norwegian Red Cross
The Norwegian Red Cross (''Norges Røde Kors'') was founded on 22 September 1865 by prime minister Frederik Stang. In 1895 the Norwegian Red Cross began educating nurses, and in 1907 the Norwegian Ministry of Defence authorized the organization for voluntary medical aid in war. The Norwegian Red Cross was one of the first national organizations in the International Red Cross. The organization now has 150,000 members and provides a variety of humanitarian services, including care for old and the infirm, prisoner visits, outdoor rescue, and international work. Humanitarian Aid
Humanitarian aid is material and logistic assistance to people who need help. It is usually short-term help until the long-term help by the government and other institutions replaces it. Among the people in need are the homeless, refugees, and victims of natural disasters, wars, and famines. Humanitarian relief efforts are provided for humanitarian purposes and include natural disasters and man-made disasters. The primary objective of humanitarian aid is to save lives, alleviate suffering, and maintain human dignity. It may, therefore, be distinguished from development aid, which seeks to address the underlying socioeconomic factors which may have led to a crisis or emergency. There is a debate on linking humanitarian aid and development efforts, which was reinforced by the World Humanitarian Summit in 2016. However, the conflation is viewed critically by practitioners. Fridtjof Heyerdahl
Fritjof Heyerdahl (4 June 1879 – 27 September 1970) was a Norwegian engineer and industrial leader. He was born in Christiania to engineer Halvor Emil Heyerdahl and Alma Hedrich, and was married to Borghild Strugstad, daughter of Oscar Sigvald Julius Strugstad and sister of Oscar Sigvald Strugstad. He was director of ''Norsk A/S Siemens Schuckert'' from 1914 to 1945, and held several positions in engineering organizations. Thor (; from non, Þórr ) is a prominent god in Germanic paganism. Sven Mollekleiv
Sven Mollekleiv (born 2 March 1956) is a Norwegian organisational leader and Honorary President of the Norwegian Red Cross. He served as Secretary General of the Norwegian Red Cross from 1991 to 2001 and President on a voluntary basis from October 2008 to October 2017. Background and education Sven Mollekleiv was born in Bergen in Norway, but grew up in Oslo. After finishing upper secondary school in Oslo, Mollekleiv continued with further studies at Norwegian School of Sport Sciences where he was awarded a master's degree. Thorvald Stoltenberg
Thorvald Stoltenberg (8 July 1931 – 13 July 2018) was a Norwegian politician and diplomat. He served as Minister of Defence from 1979 to 1981 and Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1987 to 1989 and again from 1990 to 1993 in two Labour governments. From 1989 to 1990 he served as the Norwegian ambassador to the UN. In 1990, he became the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees but served only one year before he rejoined the Norwegian government. Astrid Nøklebye Heiberg
Astrid Nøklebye Heiberg (14 April 1936 – 2 April 2020) was a Norway, Norwegian politician for the Conservative Party of Norway, Conservative Party, and a professor of medicine. She was the state secretary to the Minister of Social Affairs 1981–1985, and Minister of Administration and Consumer Affairs in 1986. Heiberg was vice-chairwoman of the Conservative Party from 1990 to 1991 and member of the Norwegian Parliament from 1985 to 1989. Bjørn Bruland
Bjørn Rochmann Bruland (13 October 1926 – 3 July 2014) was a Norwegian admiral and politician for the Labour Party. He was born in Rjukan and started his career in the Royal Norwegian Navy in 1945 after taking his education at the Norwegian Naval Academy, also serving in the British and US navies and under the Supreme Allied Commander Atlantic. He reached the rank of rear admiral. Bruland led the Norwegian Naval Training Establishment "HNoMS Tordenskjold" and the naval camp at Madla, "HNoMS Harald Hårfagre" and served as director of the Norwegian Defence University College. In the diplomacy, he served as defence attaché in Yugoslavia and Austria. Bjørn Egge
Bjørn Egge CBE (19 August 1918 – 25 July 2007) was a Major General of the Norwegian Army and President of the Norwegian Red Cross (1981–1987). He served as deputy head of the NATO Defence College (1976–1980). Egge was a soldier during the German attack on Norway in 1940. He participated in the break out by Norwegian merchant vessels from Gothenburg in March 1942, the vessel he was on board was sunk and he was captured by the Germans. He spent three years in concentration camps. He was arrested on 1 April 1942, and sat in ''Marlag und Milag Nord'' until being transferred to Rendsburg in early 1943. He went on to Sonnenburg in June 1943, then Sachsenhausen in November 1944. He returned to Norway in May 1945. Grethe Johnsen
Grethe Helene Johnsen, born Middelthon (1915 – 19 May 2014) was a Norwegian organizational worker. She was born in Kalvøy outside of Stavanger, and moved to the city at the age of twelve. She became active in the Norwegian Red Cross at an early age, and became its first female president in 1975. Torstein Dale
Torstein Dale (8 May 1907 – 18 March 1977) was a Norwegian physician and military officer. He served as president of the Norwegian Red Cross. Personal life Dale was born at Bruvik in Hordaland, Norway. He was the son of Albert Martin Dale (1880–1959) and Oline Neset (1878–1954). He graduated as cand.med. from the University of Oslo in 1934. In 1962 he married Unn Motzfeldt Søiland. Career Dale participated as a volunteer in the Norwegian People's Aid during the Finnish Winter War (1939-1940) in the aftermath of the invasion by the Soviet Union. Following the Occupation of Norway by Nazi Germany, Dale was head of the hospital at the Norwegian Armed Forces in exile in Scotland, and he chaired the medical service during the Liberation of Finnmark in 1944.
