Merkantilt Biografisk Leksikon
''Merkantilt biografisk leksikon: hvem er hvem i næringslivet?'' ( en, Mercantile Biographical Encyclopedia: Who is Who in the Enterprise?) was a Norwegian-language encyclopedia published by Yrkesforlaget in 1935. It featured approximately 10,000 short biographical entries for Norwegian businesspeople, and was edited by Einar Hoffstad (1894–1959). It was printed by Grøndahl & Søns Boktrykkeri. The purpose of the encyclopedia was to "remedy the need to know something about the individuals one is trading with". The entries contain little genealogical information, and the parents of the portrayed businesspeople are not included. Abbreviations are used extensively to save space and money. The editor, Einar Hoffstad, stated in the foreword of the encyclopedia that it was not a parallel to the '' Who's Who'' reference works, although the title could imply that. Norwegian Language
Norwegian ( no, norsk, links=no ) is a North Germanic language spoken mainly in Norway, where it is an official language. Along with Swedish and Danish, Norwegian forms a dialect continuum of more or less mutually intelligible local and regional varieties; some Norwegian and Swedish dialects, in particular, are very close. These Scandinavian languages, together with Faroese and Icelandic as well as some extinct languages, constitute the North Germanic languages. Faroese and Icelandic are not mutually intelligible with Norwegian in their spoken form because continental Scandinavian has diverged from them. While the two Germanic languages with the greatest numbers of speakers, English and German, have close similarities with Norwegian, neither is mutually intelligible with it. Norwegian is a descendant of Old Norse, the common language of the Germanic peoples living in Scandinavia during the Viking Age. Einar Hoffstad
Einar Hoffstad (4 September 1894 – 25 July 1959) was a Norwegian encyclopedist, newspaper editor, writer and economist. He remains best known as the editor of the encyclopedia ''Merkantilt biografisk leksikon'' and the business periodical ''Farmand''. Although initially a classic liberal, Hoffstad embraced fascism and collectivism at the beginning of the Second World War. Career He was born in Sandefjord to botanist and teacher Olaf Alfred Hoffstad (1865–1943); his younger brother was Arne Hoffstad (1900–1980), who became an editor and Conservative politician. Having finished his secondary education in 1913, Einar Hoffstad enrolled at the Norwegian Institute of Technology, where he studied until 1916. Grøndahl & Søn Forlag was a Norwegian publishing house established in 1812. Christopher Grøndahl (1784–1864) started it as a print in 1812, before it started commercial publishing in 1875. It was acquired by J.W. Cappelens Forlag in 1990, merged with Dreyers Forlag in 1991 into Grøndahl & Dreyers Forlag. The latter company was merged into Cappelen Cappelen is a Norwegian surname. ''Who's Who'' (or ''Who is Who'') is the title of a number of reference publications, generally containing concise biography, biographical information on the prominent people of a country. The title has been adopted as an expression meaning a group of notable persons. The oldest and best-known is the annual publication ''Who's Who (UK), Who's Who'', a reference work on contemporary prominent people in Britain published annually since 1849. In addition to legitimate reference works, some ''Who's Who'' lists involve the selling of "memberships" in fraudulent directories that are created online or through instant publishing services. AARP, the University at Buffalo and the Government of South Australia have published warnings of these ''Who's Who'' scams. ( in the masthead; ; Norwegian for "The Evening Post") is Norway's largest printed newspaper by circulation. It is based in Oslo. It sold 211,769 copies in 2015 (172,029 printed copies according to University of Bergen) and estimated 1.2 million readers. It converted from broadsheet to compact format in March 2005. Project Runeberg
Project Runeberg ( sv, Projekt Runeberg) is a digital cultural archive initiative that publishes free electronic versions of books significant to the culture and history of the Nordic countries. Patterned after Project Gutenberg, it was founded by Lars Aronsson and colleagues at Linköping University and began archiving Nordic-language literature in December 1992. As of 2015 it had accomplished digitization to provide graphical facsimiles of old works such as the '' Nordisk familjebok'', and had accomplished, in whole or in part, the text extractions and copyediting of these as well as esteemed Latin works and English translations from Nordic authors, and sheet music and other texts of cultural interest. A biographical dictionary is a type of encyclopedic dictionary limited to biographical information. Many attempt to cover the major personalities of a country (with limitations, such as living persons only, in ''Who's Who'', or deceased people only, in the ''Dictionary of National Biography'').
