Anatoly Gladyshev
Anatoly Vasilievich Gladyshev (russian: Анатолий Васильевич Гладышев, 1947 – 19 February 1984) was a Russian ice speedway rider who won two world titles in 1978–1981. Gladyshev died at a race during the 23rd heat of the 1984 Individual Ice Speedway World Championship in Moscow on 19 February 1984. After colliding with Vitaly Russkikh he fell into the path of Walter Wartbichler who was unable to avoid colliding with him. He suffered an artery rupture caused by the front tyre of the bike and died later in hospital. Gladyshev was 37 and should have retired to assume a position of mechanic in the national team but continued competing mostly to replace injured teammates. At the time of his death he was married to his wife Diana and had two sons, Stanislav and Dmitri. Rubtsovsk (russian: Рубцо́вск, ) is a types of inhabited localities in Russia, city in Altai Krai, Russia, located on the Aley River (Ob River, Ob's tributary) southwest of Barnaul. Outline The bikes race counterclockwise around oval tracks between 260 and 425 metres in length. The race structure and scoring are similar to that in speedway. History Ice speedway is an evolution of dirt speedway racing, which first started in 1923. Staten Lorenz of Michigan is generally credited with the invention of the sport, in 1975. The first ice speedway event was organized and promoted by a local motorcycle dealer in Huntsville, Alabama. The third ever event was hosted at the Kent State University hockey field house, which speedway rider Gary Densford was invited to attend by his friend Bob Hetrick. Individual Ice Racing World Championship
The Individual Ice Speedway World Championship is an Ice speedway championship held annually to determine an individual World Champion. History The first Championships were held in 1966. A European Championship was held for the two years preceding the World Championships.The event has been dominated by the Soviet Union/Russia, who have won all but seven of the World Championship titles since 1966. Sweden has won five times, Czechoslovakia twice and Finland once. Medalists In 2021 and 2022 Russian athletes competed as neutral competitors using the designation MFR (Motorcycle Federation of Russia), as the Court of Arbitration for Sport upheld a ban on Russia competing at World Championships. The ban was implemented by the World Anti-Doping Agency in response to state-sponsored doping program of Russian athletes. 1984 Individual Ice Speedway World Championship
The 1984 Individual Ice Speedway World Championship was the 19th edition of the World Championship The Championship was held on 17 and 18 February 1984 at the Lenin Stadium in Moscow in the Soviet Union. The winner was Erik Stenlund of the Sweden. This was the first time since 1974 when the Championship was won by a rider not representing the Soviet Union. Anatoly Gladyshev was killed during the 23rd heat of the second day. After colliding with Vitaly Russkikh he fell into the path of Walter Wartbichler who ran over him. He suffered an artery rupture caused by the front tyre of the bike and died later in hospital.
