1984 Individual Ice Speedway World Championship
The 1984 Individual Ice Speedway World Championship was the 19th edition of the World Championship The Championship was held on 17 and 18 February 1984 at the Lenin Stadium in Moscow in the Soviet Union. The winner was Erik Stenlund of the Sweden. This was the first time since 1974 when the Championship was won by a rider not representing the Soviet Union. Anatoly Gladyshev was killed during the 23rd heat of the second day. After colliding with Vitaly Russkikh he fell into the path of Walter Wartbichler who ran over him. He suffered an artery rupture caused by the front tyre of the bike and died later in hospital. Individual Ice Speedway World Championship
The Individual Ice Speedway World Championship is an Ice speedway championship held annually to determine an individual World Champion. History The first Championships were held in 1966. A European Championship was held for the two years preceding the World Championships.The event has been dominated by the Soviet Union/Russia, who have won all but seven of the World Championship titles since 1966. Sweden has won five times, Czechoslovakia twice and Finland once. Medalists In 2021 and 2022 Russian athletes competed as neutral competitors using the designation MFR (Motorcycle Federation of Russia), as the Court of Arbitration for Sport upheld a ban on Russia competing at World Championships. The ban was implemented by the World Anti-Doping Agency in response to state-sponsored doping program of Russian athletes. Jarmo Hirvasoja (born 4 September 1954) is a former international speedway rider from Finland. Speedway career Hirvasoja became a world champion after winning the gold medal at the Individual Ice Speedway World Championship in the 1990 Individual Ice Speedway World Championship. In addition he won a silver medal in 1985 and two medals at the Team Ice Racing World Championship. The 1984 Team Ice Racing World Championship was the sixth edition of the Team World Championship. The final was held on 10/11 March, 1984, in Deventer in the Netherlands. The 1984 Individual Speedway World Championship was the 39th edition of the official World Championship to determine the world champion rider. Without former champions Ivan Mauger, Ole Olsen, Peter Collins, Michael Lee, and Bruce Penhall, the 1984 World Final, held for the eighth time at the Ullevi Stadium in Göteborg, Sweden, was seen by some as the battle of the second tier riders. Though history would ultimately prove the first and second placed riders as among the best Motorcycle speedway has ever seen, winning every World Final between them until the end of the 1980s. Dane Erik Gundersen won his first Speedway World Championship from countryman Hans Nielsen who defeated American Lance King in a run-off for second and third places.
