Individual Ice Speedway World Championship
The Individual Ice Speedway World Championship is an Ice speedway championship held annually to determine an individual World Champion. History The first Championships were held in 1966. A European Championship was held for the two years preceding the World Championships.The event has been dominated by the Soviet Union/Russia, who have won all but seven of the World Championship titles since 1966. Sweden has won five times, Czechoslovakia twice and Finland once. Medalists In 2021 and 2022 Russian athletes competed as neutral competitors using the designation MFR (Motorcycle Federation of Russia), as the Court of Arbitration for Sport upheld a ban on Russia competing at World Championships. The ban was implemented by the World Anti-Doping Agency in response to state-sponsored doping program of Russian athletes. Ice speedway is a developed form of motorcycle speedway racing, featuring racing on frozen surfaces. The sport uses bikes enhanced for the terrain. Participants can compete at international level. Outline The bikes race counterclockwise around oval tracks between 260 and 425 metres in length. The race structure and scoring are similar to that in speedway. History Ice speedway is an evolution of dirt speedway racing, which first started in 1923. Staten Lorenz of Michigan is generally credited with the invention of the sport, in 1975. The first ice speedway event was organized and promoted by a local motorcycle dealer in Huntsville, Alabama. The third ever event was hosted at the Kent State University hockey field house, which speedway rider Gary Densford was invited to attend by his friend Bob Hetrick. Conny Samuelsson
Conny Samuelsson (born 15 August 1947) is a former international motorcycle speedway rider from Sweden. Speedway career Samuelsson won the silver medal at the Individual Ice Speedway World Championship in the 1977 Individual Ice Speedway World Championship. He had won a bronze medal the previous year in the 1976 Individual Ice Speedway World Championship. He rode in the top tier of British Speedway in 1969 riding for Oxford Cheetahs. It was the only club outside of the Njudungarna team that he ever rode for. He spent 35 years riding for Njudungarna. He was capped 9 times by the Sweden national speedway team. Sergey Tarabanko
Sergey Aleksandrovich Tarabanko (russian: Сергей Александрович Тарабанько, born 25 August 1949) is a retired Russian ice speedway rider who won seven world titles between 1975 and 1981. Biography Tarabanko was born in Moscow, but was soon moved to Kirovsk and then Angarsk, where he started training in cross-country motorcycle racing. After working as a turner at a factory, between 1968 and 1972 he served in the army. In 1975 he graduated from the University of Pedagogy in Chita. He then worked as a test driver for a Jawa Motors factory in Novosibirsk, and in 1977 moved to Moscow to coach motorcycle racers. He participated in the 1988 Winter Olympics as a driver of the Soviet Olympic team and later worked as the head of the CSKA racing team in Moscow.
