All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship 1891
The 1891 All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship was the fifth staging of the All-Ireland hurling championship since its establishment by the Gaelic Athletic Association in 1887. The championship began on 20 September 1891 and ended on 28 February 1892. Cork were the defending champions, however, they were defeated in the provincial series. Kerry won the All-Ireland following a 2-3 to 1-5 defeat of Wexford in the final. Teams A total of seven teams contested the championship. The Leinster championship was contested by four teams: Dublin (Raparees), Kildare (Maynooth), Laois and Wexford (Crossabeg). Three counties contested the Munster championship: Cork (Blackrock), Kerry (Ballyduff) and Limerick (Treaty Stones). There were no provincial championships in either Connacht or Ulster. John Mahony
John Mahony (1 January 1864 – 31 December 1943) was an Republic of Ireland, Irish sportsperson. He played hurling at with his local club Ballyduff GAA Club, Ballyduff and with the Kerry GAA, Kerry senior inter-county team in the 1890s. Mahony captained Kerry to their only All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship, All-Ireland hurling title in 1891. Biography John Mahony was born in Kilmore, Ballyduff, County Kerry, Ballyduff, County Kerry in 1864. The son of John and Bridget (née Doran), he grew up in an area that was and still is famous for hurling. Like many of his contemporaries Mahony earned his living from fishing and from thatching roofs. He later gained a reputation as a fine sportsman and as an outspoken individual. Maynooth GAA (Irish: Cumann Lúthchleas Gael Máigh Núad) is a Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) club in Maynooth, County Kildare, Ireland. Ballyduff G.A.A. is a Gaelic Athletic Association club in Ballyduff, Co Kerry, Ireland. The club fields both Hurling and Gaelic football teams. 1889 All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship
The 1889 All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship was the third staging of the All-Ireland hurling championship since its establishment by the Gaelic Athletic Association in 1887. The championship began on 27 July 1889 and ended on 3 November 1889. Tipperary were the defending champions; however, they were defeated in the provincial series. Dublin won the title following a 5-1 to 1-6 defeat of Clare in the final. Teams A total of ten teams contested the championship, one less than the previous year. It was the first championship to be completed since 1887. Blackrock National Hurling Club
Blackrock National Hurling Club is a Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) club located on the southside of Cork City, Ireland. The club was founded in 1883 and is primarily concerned with the game of hurling. No other Cork-based GAA club has won more Senior County Hurling titles or All-Ireland Club Championships. The club is sometimes known as 'The Rockies'. History Blackrock Hurling Club was officially founded in 1883, one year before the foundation of the Gaelic Athletic Association itself.
