Alan Connolly (hurler)
Alan Connolly (born 19 July 2001) is an Irish hurler who plays as a full-forward for club side Blackrock and at inter-county level with the Cork senior hurling team. Playing career Blackrock Having earlier lined out in the juvenile, minor and under-21 grades, Connolly joined the Blackrock senior team in advance of the 2019 Championship. He made his championship debut on 10 August 2019 when he lined out at right corner-forward in a 1–25 to 2–16 defeat by Newtownshandrum. On 4 October 2020, Connolly was selected at full-forward when Blackrock faced Glen Rovers in the Cork PSHC final. He top scored for the team with 0–13, including ten points from frees, and claimed a winners' medal after being named man of the match in the 4–26 to 4–18 extra-time win. Blackrock, Cork
Blackrock is a suburb, with a village core, in the southeast of Cork City, Ireland. Originally a small fishing village about five kilometres from Cork City, the growth of the city over time has meant that the village has become incorporated into the city. It is home to Blackrock GAA club, Blackrock Castle, a weekly farmers market, and as of 2015 has seen some investment in regeneration projects for the traditional village centre. Blackrock is within the Cork South-Central Dáil constituency. Places of interest A short distance from the village is Blackrock Castle. 2020 All-Ireland Under-20 Hurling Championship
The 2020 All-Ireland Under-20 Hurling Championship was the second staging of the All-Ireland Under-20 Hurling Championship, All-Ireland Under-20 Championship and the 57th staging overall of a hurling championship for players between the All-Ireland Minor Hurling Championship, minor and All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship, senior grades. The championship was scheduled to begin in May 2020, however, it was postponed indefinitely due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on Gaelic games. The championship eventually began on 19 October 2020 and, after being suspended once again, ended on 10 July 2021. National Hurling League
The National Hurling League is an annual Inter county, inter-county hurling competition featuring teams from Ireland and England. Founded in 1925 by the Gaelic Athletic Association, it operates on a system of promotion and relegation within the league system. The league has 35 teams divided into six divisions, with either five or six teams in each division. Promotion and relegation between these divisions is a central feature of the league. Although primarily a competition for Irish teams, teams from England – currently Lancashire GAA, Lancashire, London GAA, London and Warwickshire GAA, Warwickshire – also take part, while in the past New York GAA, New York also fielded a team for the latter stages of the league. 2022 Cork Premier Senior Hurling Championship
The 2022 Cork Premier Senior Hurling Championship was the third staging of the Cork Premier Senior Hurling Championship and the 134th staging overall of a championship for the top-ranking hurling teams in County Cork, Cork. The draw for the group stage placings took place on 8 February 2022. The championship ran from 7 June to 16 October 2022. Midleton GAA, Midleton entered the championship as the 2021 Cork Premier Senior Hurling Championship, defending champions, however, they failed to qualify for the #Knockout stage, knockout stage after losing two games and finishing bottom of #Group A, Group A. 2021 Cork Premier Senior Hurling Championship
The 2021 Cork Premier Senior Hurling Championship was the second staging of the Cork Premier Senior Hurling Championship and the 133rd staging overall of a championship for the top-ranking hurling teams in Cork. The draw for the group stage placings took place on 29 April 2021. The championship began on 14 July 2021 and ended on 21 November 2021. Blackrock entered the championship as the defending champions, however, they were beaten by Midleton at the semi-final stage. Carrigtwohill were relegated from the championship after being beaten in a playoff by Charleville. The final was played on 21 November 2021 at Páirc Uí Chaoimh in Cork, between Glen Rovers and Midleton, in what was their first meeting in a final in 30 years. Jimmy Brohan
James Brohan (18 June 1935 – 19 September 2023) was an Irish sportsperson. He played hurling with his local club Blackrock and was a member of the Cork senior inter-county team from 1954 until 1963. Early life Born in Ballintemple, Brohan, the middle child in a family of seven, grew up in Blackrock after the family moved there in 1939. Two of his brothers played soccer in the League of Ireland with Evergreen United and Cork Hibernians. His father was born in Fethard, County Tipperary but moved to Cork and worked in the Metropole Hotel. Brohan first played hurling and Gaelic football as a schoolboy at Sullivan's Quay CBS. He played on the school's Harty Cup team for a number of years, beginning as a goalkeeper but later becoming an outfield player. He was full-forward on the Sullivan's Quay Harty Cup team that beat the North Monastery in 1951 before losing the final to Thurles CBS. Mick Cashman
Michael Cashman (1931 – 17 September 1988) was an Irish hurler who played as a goalkeeper for the Cork senior team. Born in Blackrock, Cork, Cashman first arrived on the inter-county scene at the age of seventeen when he first linked up with the Cork minor team before later joining the junior side. He joined the senior team during the 1951 championship. Cashman went on to enjoy a decade-long inter-county career and won two Munster medals and one National Hurling League medal. He was an All-Ireland runner-up on one occasion. As a member of the Munster inter-provincial team on a number of occasions, Cashman won six Railway Cup medals. At club level he won two championship medals with Blackrock. His brother-in-law, Jimmy Brohan, was a contemporary on the Cork hurling team, while his sons, Tom and Jim, enjoyed All-Ireland success with Cork. The GAA Hurling All-Ireland Senior Championship, known simply as the All-Ireland Championship, is an annual inter-county hurling competition organised by the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA). It is the highest inter-county hurling competition in Ireland, and has been contested every year except one since 1887. James Cashman (born 9 June 1965) is an Irish retired hurler who played as a centre-back for the Cork senior team. Born in Blackrock, Cork, Cashman first played competitive hurling during his schooling at Coláiste Chríost Rí. He arrived on the inter-county scene at the age of sixteen when he first linked up with the Cork minor team before later joining the under-21 side. He made his senior debut during the 1985 Oireachtas Cup. Cashman subsequently became a regular member of the starting fifteen and won two All-Ireland medals, three Munster medals and one National Hurling League medal. He was an All-Ireland runner-up on one occasion. As a member of the Munster inter-provincial team on a number of occasions, Cashman won one Railway Cup medal. Tom Cashman
Tom Cashman (born 28 August 1957) is an Irish former hurler, coach and selector who played for Cork Senior Championship club Blackrock. He played for the Cork senior hurling team for 12 years. Equally comfortable as a half-back or at midfield, Cashman is regarded as one of the greatest players of all time. Cashman began his hurling career at club level with Blackrock. He broke onto the club's top adult team as a 16-year-old in 1974 and enjoyed his greatest success at midfield on the All-Ireland Club Championship-winning team in 1979. Cashman's club career ended in 1990, by which time he had also won three Munster Club Championship titles and four Cork Senior Championship titles. Shane Barrett (born 2001) is an Irish hurler who plays as a right corner-forward for club side Blarney and at inter-county level with the Cork senior hurling team. Career Blarney Barrett joined the Blarney club at a young age and played in all grades at juvenile and underage levels. On 21 April 2019, he made his championship debut and scored five points from play in a 0-24 to 2-12 defeat of Ballinhassig. On 3 October 2020, Barrett scored two points from play when Blarney secured the Premier Intermediate Championship title after defeating Castlelyons by 1-20 to 0-15 in the final.
