Jimmy Brohan
James Brohan (18 June 1935 – 19 September 2023) was an Irish sportsperson. He played hurling with his local club Blackrock and was a member of the Cork senior inter-county team from 1954 until 1963. Early life Born in Ballintemple, Brohan, the middle child in a family of seven, grew up in Blackrock after the family moved there in 1939. Two of his brothers played soccer in the League of Ireland with Evergreen United and Cork Hibernians. His father was born in Fethard, County Tipperary but moved to Cork and worked in the Metropole Hotel. Brohan first played hurling and Gaelic football as a schoolboy at Sullivan's Quay CBS. He played on the school's Harty Cup team for a number of years, beginning as a goalkeeper but later becoming an outfield player. He was full-forward on the Sullivan's Quay Harty Cup team that beat the North Monastery in 1951 before losing the final to Thurles CBS. Blackrock GAA
Blackrock National Hurling Club is a Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) club located on the southside of Cork City, Ireland. The club was founded in 1883 and is primarily concerned with the game of hurling. No other Cork-based GAA club has won more Senior County Hurling titles or All-Ireland Club Championships. The club is sometimes known as 'The Rockies'. History Blackrock Hurling Club was officially founded in 1883, one year before the foundation of the Gaelic Athletic Association itself. The 1961 Cork Senior Hurling Championship was the 73rd staging of the Cork Senior Hurling Championship since its establishment by the Cork County Board in 1887. The draw for the opening round fixtures took place at the Cork Convention on 29 January 1961. The championship began ob 9 April 1961 and ended on 17 September 1961. Glen Rovers were the defending champions, however, they were defeated by Avondhu at the semi-final stage. On 17 September 1961, Blackrock won the championship following a 4-10 to 3-7 defeat of Avondhu in the final. The 1959 Cork Senior Hurling Championship was the 71st staging of the Cork Senior Hurling Championship since its establishment by the Cork County Board in 1887. The draw for the opening round fixtures took place at the Cork Convention on 25 January 1959. The championship began on 5 April 1959 and ended on 25 October 1959. Glen Rovers entered the championship as the defending champions. The final was played on 25 October 1959 at the Athletic Grounds in Cork, between Glen Rovers and Blackrock, in what was their first meeting in the final in two years. Captain (Gaelic Games)
A captain of a Gaelic games team, sometimes known as a ''skipper'', is a player who, during the course of a match as well as before and after it, has several additional roles and responsibilities over and above those of his teammates. Tradition means that some teams rotate the captaincy annually, though others may adopt a permanent captain. As well as being an onfield leader, a captain takes the coin toss and raises the trophy when this is the game's prize. Responsibilities The captain leads the team out onto the pitch. Before the start of a match, a coin toss between captains of the opposing teams is used to determine which end of the ground each team will kick to. The Cork Junior A Football Championship (known for sponsorship reasons as the Co-Op Superstores Cork Junior A Football Championship and abbreviated to the Cork JAFC) is an annual Gaelic football competition organised by the Cork County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association and contested by the top-ranking junior clubs in the county of Cork in Ireland. It is the fifth tier overall in the entire Cork football championship system. The Cork Junior Championship was introduced in 1895 as a countywide competition for teams deemed not eligible for the senior grade or second-string senior teams. Dromtarriffe GAA
Dromtarriffe GAA is a Gaelic Athletic Association club based in the north-west of County Cork, Ireland. The club is affiliated to the Duhallow division of Cork GAA. Their hurling team currently competes in the Duhallow Junior A Hurling Championship and their football team currently competes in the Cork Intermediate A Football Championship. The club has historically been concerned with the game of Gaelic football, but also fields teams in hurling competitions. Dromtarriffe (or Dromtarriff or Dromtariffe) is a small townland, as well as being the name of the parish in the same area. It is not a village, but the parish is centred on the very small village of Dromagh, which is around half a mile from the townland of Dromtarriffe. St Michael's Gaelic Football Club is a Gaelic football club in Cork City, Ireland. The club was formed in 1951 after a discussion in The Leaping Salmon Public House in Blackrock near Cork. At that time some of the Blackrock hurlers played football with different city teams and it was decided to enter a football team from Blackrock, thus keeping the players together. A formal meeting was held and St Michael's Gaelic Football Club was established. Current Championship grades History St Michael's first match was against Crosshaven, with Jimmy Furlong as captain. The club's first success was in 1956 when St Michael's took their first Cork Junior Football Championship title, and as there was no Intermediate Championship or League the club took the decision to go Senior in 1957. Glen Rovers GAA
Glen Rovers is a Cork (city), Cork-based Gaelic Athletic Association club based in Blackpool, Cork, Ireland. The club was founded in 1916 and is primarily concerned with the game of hurling. They were Cork senior hurling champions in 2015 and 2016, having won their first title in 26 years in 2015. They retained the championship in 2016, when they beat Erin's Own in the final. Only Blackrock have won more Cork senior hurling championships. Hurling Colours In the early days of the club, its colours were green, white and gold. The Easter Rising and the execution of the leaders took place in the same year the Glen was founded.
