Alabama Expedition
''Two Against the Ice'' is a non-fiction book authored by Danish explorer Ejnar Mikkelsen. The book details the author's exploration into Greenland, a journey made with his compatriot Iver P. Iversen in 1910. The book was originally published in Danish (1955) and later translated into English by Maurice Michael (first published in 1957). Summary Mikkelsen recounts his round-trip 2,500 mile sledge journey from Shannon Island to Danmark Fjord. A task which soon became a battle for survival as rations ran low, and the sled dogs began to starve to death, or were intentionally shot in order to provide food for the other dogs. The two adventurers became so hungry that they began to hallucinate. In a notable moment that typifies the hunger pains that the men were suffering, Iversen no longer wished to carry his rifle out of a fear he may be compelled to shoot Mikkelsen. Ejnar Mikkelsen
Ejnar Mikkelsen (December 23, 1880 – May 1, 1971) was a Danish polar explorer and author. He is most known for his expeditions to Greenland. Biography Mikkelsen was born in Vester Brønderslev, Jutland. He served in the Georg Carl Amdrup expedition to Christian IX Land, East Greenland (1900), and in the Baldwin-Ziegler North Pole Expedition to Franz Joseph Land (1900–02). With Ernest de Koven Leffingwell he organized the Anglo-American polar expedition which wintered off Flaxman Island, Alaska, in 1906–07. Shannon Island
Shannon Island ( da, Shannon Ø) is a large island in Northeast Greenland National Park in eastern Greenland, to the east of Hochstetter Foreland, with an area of . It was named by Douglas Charles Clavering on his 1823 expedition for the Royal Navy frigate HMS ''Shannon'', a 38 gun frigate on which he served as midshipman under Sir Philip Broke. The island is also home to many different types of animals such as polar bears, walruses, ravens, and oxen. History Most landmarks in the area were named by the Second German Polar Expedition under Carl Koldewey in 1869–70. Between October 1943 and June 1944, the German meteorological expedition ''Bassgeiger'' operated under difficult conditions at Kap Sussi on Shannon. Their ship ''Coburg'' was wrecked off Shannon. Danmark Fjord
Danmark Fjord (), also known as Denmark Sound, is a fjord in northeast Greenland. Administratively it belongs to the Northeast Greenland National Park. The fjord was explored and named after the expedition ship '' Danmark'' at the time of the ill-fated Denmark expedition 1906-1908 led by Ludvig Mylius-Erichsen, which mapped Greenland's northeastern coast between Cape Bridgman and Cape Bismarck. History In May 1907 Mylius-Erichsen entered the unknown Danmark Fjord with his three-dogsled exploration team, deeming it would be leading him to the Navy Cliff and the postulated Peary Channel, which in fact did not exist. Ludvig Mylius-Erichsen
Ludvig Mylius-Erichsen (15 January 1872 – 25 November 1907) was a Danish author, ethnologist, and explorer, from Ringkøbing. He was most notably an explorer of Greenland. Literary expedition With Count Harald Moltke and Knud Rasmussen Mylius-Erichsen formed the Danish Literary Expedition (1902–04) to West Greenland, and, in the early stages (1902), discovered, near Evighedsfjord, two ice-free mountain ranges. The party later proceeded to Cape York and lived for 10 months in native fashion with the Eskimo. The return journey of the expedition to Upernavik across the ice of Melville Bay was the first sledge crossing on record. Danmark Expedition
The Denmark expedition ( da, Danmark-ekspeditionen), also known as the Denmark Expedition to Greenland's Northeast Coast, and as the Danmark Expedition after the ship, was an expedition to the northeast of Greenland in 1906–1908. Despite being overshadowed by the death in tragic circumstances of the main exploration team, including three of the expedition's leading members: Ludvig Mylius-Erichsen (1872–1907), Niels Peter Høeg Hagen (1877–1907) and Jørgen Brønlund (1877–1907), the Denmark expedition was not a failure. It achieved its main cartographic objectives and succeeded in exploring the vast region, drawing accurate charts of formerly unexplored coastlines and fjords, naming numerous geographic features, and gathering a wealth of scientific data. Jørgen Brønlund
Jørgen Brønlund (14 December 1877 – November 1907), was a Kalaallit, Greenlandic polar explorer, educator, and Catechism, catechist. He participated in two Danish expeditions to Greenland in the early 20th century. Early years Brønlund, an Greenlandic Inuit, Greenlandic Inuk and the son of a hunter, was born in Ilulissat, Greenland, Kingdom of Denmark, then known as Jakobshavn, on 14 December 1877. He was a childhood friend of Knud Rasmussen whose father was a priest in Jakobshavn. Trained as a teacher, Brønlund graduated in 1901 from Nuuk College and was employed as a catechist at a trading post near the Nuup Kangerlua estuary. Niels Peter Høeg Hagen
Niels Peter Høeg Hagen (15 October 1877 – 15 November 1907) was a Danish military officer, polar explorer and cartographer. He participated and perished in the ill-fated Denmark expedition to NE Greenland in 1906. The Denmark expedition Høeg Hagen, together with expedition leader Ludvig Mylius-Erichsen and the Greenlander Jørgen Brønlund, was part of the team of dogsleds that aimed to explore the Independence Fjord area from the east. Misled by existing maps, the three men prolonged their journey to such an extent that a return to the ship at Danmarkshavn that spring was impossible. The three of them were forced to spend the summer in the desolate area without the necessary footgear for hunting in the stony ground.
