Akephaloi
In church history, the term ' (from Ancient Greek: ', "headless", singular ' from ', "without", and ', "head") has been applied to several sects that supposedly had no leader. E. Cobham Brewer wrote, in ''Brewer's Dictionary of Phrase and Fable, Dictionary of Phrase and Fable'', that acephalites, "properly means men without a head." Jean Cooper wrote, in ''Dictionary of Christianity'', that it characterizes "various schismatical Christian bodies". This is "based on the Christian references taken from Brewer's ''Dictionary of phrase and fable''". Among them were Nestorians who rejected the Council of Ephesus’ condemnation of Patriarch Nestorius of Constantinople, which deposed Nestorius and declared him a heretic. Barsanuphians
The Barsanuphians (also Barsanuphites or Bersounouphites) were a monophysite non-Chalcedonian Christian sect in Egypt between the late 6th and early 9th century. According to Timothy of Constantinople and the ''History of the Patriarchs of Alexandria'', the sect took its name from a certain Barsanuphius who assumed the title of bishop. They were counted among the '' Akephaloi'' (leaderless ones) who split from the mainstream monophysite patriarchate of Alexandria during the reign of the Emperor Zeno (474–491) on account of the ''Henoticon'' (482). They developed a distinct hierarchy, separating from the ''Akephaloi'', during the time of the Patriarch Damian (578–607). The Barsanuphians were limited to Alexandria and a few villages in the eastern Nile Delta. They do not seem to have had more than three bishops. Henoticon
The ''Henotikon'' ( or in English; Greek ''henōtikón'' "act of union") was a christological document issued by Byzantine emperor Zeno in 482, in an unsuccessful attempt to reconcile the differences between the supporters of the Council of Chalcedon and the council's opponents ( Non-Chalcedonian Christians). It was followed by the Acacian schism. In 451, the Council of Chalcedon settled christological disputes by condemning both Monophysitism, held by Eutyches, and Nestorianism. However, large sections of the Eastern Roman Empire, especially in Egypt, but also in Palestine and Syria, held miaphysite views. In order to restore unity, the Patriarch of Constantinople, Acacius, devised an eirenic formula, which Emperor Zeno promulgated without the approval of a synod of bishops. Miaphysitism is the Christology, Christological doctrine that holds Jesus in Christianity, Jesus, the "Incarnation (Christianity), Incarnate Logos (Christianity), Word, is fully divine and fully human, in one 'nature' (''physis'')." It is a position held by the Oriental Orthodox Churches and differs from the Council of Chalcedon, Chalcedonian position that Jesus is one "person" ( el, Hypostasis (philosophy and religion), ὑπόστασις) in two "natures" ( el, physis#Usage in patristic theology, φύσεις), a divine nature and a human nature (Dyophysitism). A benefice () or living is a reward received in exchange for services rendered and as a retainer for future services. The Roman Empire used the Latin term as a benefit to an individual from the Empire for services rendered. Its use was adopted by the Western Church in the Carolingian, Carolingian Era as a benefit bestowed by the crown or church officials. A benefice specifically from a church is called a precaria (pl. ''precariae)'', such as a stipend, and one from a monarch or nobleman is usually called a fief. A benefice is distinct from an allodial title, allod, in that an allod is property owned outright, not bestowed by a higher authority. Sinecure
A sinecure ( or ; from the Latin , 'without', and , 'care') is an office, carrying a salary or otherwise generating income, that requires or involves little or no responsibility, labour, or active service. The term originated in the medieval church, where it signified a post without any responsibility for the " cure areof souls", the regular liturgical and pastoral functions of a cleric, but came to be applied to any post, secular or ecclesiastical, that involved little or no actual work. Sinecures have historically provided a potent tool for governments or monarchs to distribute patronage, while recipients are able to store up titles and easy salaries. A sinecure can also be given to an individual whose primary job is in another office, but requires a sinecure title to perform that job. Antipope Dioscorus
Dioscorus (died 14 October 530) was a deacon of the Alexandrian and the Rome, Roman church from 506. In a disputed election following the death of Pope Felix IV, the majority of electors picked him to be pope, in spite of Pope Felix's wishes that Pope Boniface II, Boniface II should succeed him. However, Dioscorus died less than a month after the election, allowing Boniface to be consecrated pope and Dioscorus to be branded an antipope. Career Originally a deacon of the Church of Alexandria, Dioscorus was forced to flee as an opponent of Monophysitism, arriving in Rome around 506 during the Laurentian schism. Timothy I or Timotheus I (? – 1 April 518) was a Christian priest who was appointed Patriarch of Constantinople by the Byzantine emperor Anastasius I in 511. Patriarch Paul Of Alexandria
Patriarch Paul of Alexandria was Greek Patriarch of Alexandria between 537 and 542. He was elected Patriarch in 537 when the Greek Church of Alexandria, which had previously recognized the Miaphysite Theodosius I, then exiled Gainas. He was the first Chalcedonian to be elected Patriarch since 482. He was deposed by the Synod of Gaza, but later reinstated. Liberatus of Carthage (fl. 6th century) was an archdeacon and the author of an important history of the Nestorian and Monophysite controversies in the 5th- and 6th-century Christian Church.
