Afghan Breakdown
''Afghan Breakdown'' (russian: Афганский излом, translit. Afganskiy Izlom) is a 1991 war drama film about the Soviet–Afghan War directed by Vladimir Bortko and co-produced by Italy and the Soviet Union ( Lenfilm). Michele Placido plays the protagonist, Major Bandura, a commander of a unit of Soviet paratroopers, co-starring with several popular Soviet actors. The movie is still regarded by many movie critics as the best account of the war, despite newer box-office hits such as ''The 9th Company''. Vladimir Vladimirovich Bortko (russian: Владимир Владимирович Бортко; born 7 May 1946) is a Russian film director, screenwriter, producer and politician. He was a member of the State Duma between 2011 and 2021, and was awarded the title of People's Artist of Russia. Biography Vladimir Bortko was born 7 May 1946 in Moscow. He grew up in the family of the Ukrainian Soviet playwright Oleksandr Korniychuk. After his studies in the ''Geological College'' in Kyiv and his military service in 1965-1966, he worked three years as an electrical engineer in Kyiv. In 1969 he went to the Karpenko-Kary State University of Theatre, Film and Television in Kyiv. After graduating in 1974 he worked as an assistant director at the Dovzhenko Film Studios. ''Dedovshchina'' ( rus, дедовщина, p=dʲɪdɐˈfɕːinə; lit. ''reign of grandfathers'') is the informal practice of hazing and abuse of junior conscripts historically in the Soviet Armed Forces and today in the Russian armed forces, Internal Troops, and to a much lesser extent FSB, Border Guards, as well as the military forces of certain former Soviet Republics. ''The 9th Company'' (russian: 9 рота, 9 rota) is a 2005 Russian war film directed by Fedor Bondarchuk and set during the Soviet–Afghan War. The film is loosely based on a real-life battle that took place at Elevation 3234 in early 1988, during Operation Magistral, the last large-scale Soviet military operation in Afghanistan.
