Action Reaction
''Action Reaction'' is the debut album by American Post-punk band Get Smart!, released on Enigma Records' "Fever" imprint in 1984. Info It was originally announced, in Nebraska's "Capitol Punishment", that the album would be released on the "Fresh Sounds" label, which had previously released the band's debut single and the "Fresh Sounds" cassette, but the band eventually signed with the Philadelphia based "Fever Records" (not to be confused with the New York-based label of the same name), so the album was actually released on that label. The album was originally recorded by Michael McGee and produced by Taylor Ross at Media Sound in Oklahoma City. Ross then recruited Iain Burgess to remix the album for release at Chicago Recording Company in Chicago. An earlier version of "Ankle Deep In Mud" had appeared on their debut single, "Numbers and Colours", and an earlier version of "Black Mirror" has appeared on the " Sub Pop #7" compilation cassette. Get Smart! (band)
Get Smart! is a three-piece post-punk band (music), band formed in Lawrence, Kansas, in 1980 consisting of Marcus Koch, Lisa Wertman Crowe and Frank Loose. The band released 2 studio albums along with some singles and EPs over a 10-year career. The band re-united in 2020. Career The band formed while at University of Kansas in 1980 and, along with bands like the Embarrassment, and the The Micronotz, Mortal Micronotz, they were prominent in the alternative rock, alternative music scene in Lawrence. They released their first record in 1981, which was a flexi disc released with "Talk Talk" magazine. This was followed by a self-released 4-track EP called ''Words Move''. Post-punk
Post-punk (originally called new musick) is a broad genre of punk music that emerged in the late 1970s as musicians departed from punk's traditional elements and raw simplicity, instead adopting a variety of avant-garde sensibilities and non-rock influences. Enigma Records
Enigma Records (also known as Enigma Entertainment Corporation) was a popular rock and alternative American record label in the 1980s. History Enigma Records launched as a division of Greenworld Distribution, an independent music importer/distributor, in 1981. Four years later, in 1985, Enigma severed ties with Greenworld and became its own company. Enigma was initially located in Torrance, California, then El Segundo, California and finally Culver City, California. Enigma was founded and run by brothers William and Wesley Hein. Jim Martone joined the company in 1984. Enigma focused on punk rock, alternative, and heavy metal music though it also released techno (Synthicide Records), jazz (Intima Records) and classical music (Enigma Classics) through subsidiary labels. Iain Burgess
Iain Burgess (24 November 1953 – 11 February 2010) was an English record producer and audio engineer. He helped define the sound of the Chicago post-punk music scene in the 1980s and early 1990s. Burgess worked with a number of key underground bands including: Big Black, Naked Raygun, The Effigies, Rifle Sport, Get Smart!, Ministry, Green, Bloodsport, Pegboy, Poster Children, and Bhopal Stiffs. Burgess was a native of Weymouth, Dorset, England. His "Chicago sound" was described by the ''Chicago Tribune'' as: "built on no-nonsense elements: powerhouse drumming, prominent bass lines, and bold guitars that split the difference between anthemic and anarchic." It was recorded at Ramona Studios in Lawrence, KS and produced by Dave Stuckey, of the Dave and Deke Combo. ''Swimming With Sharks'' is the second album by Get Smart!, released on Enigma Records' " Restless" imprint in 1986. Info Live versions of "Back Into The Future" and "World Without End", recorded at CBGB, had previously been released as a single. Fever Records was a New York City record label of the 1980s, founded by promoter Sal Abbatiello. The label was marketed and distributed by Sutra Records until the latter went under, which precipitated a distribution deal with Russell Simmons's RAL division of Def Jam Recordings. "Numbers and Colours / Ankle Deep in Mud" is the debut release by the post-punk band Get Smart!. It was released as a 6-inch flexi disc that accompanied the May 13, 1981 issue of ''Talk Talk'' magazine. General info The song "Ankle Deep in Mud" was written by the Battling Tops, who were guitarist Marc Koch's previous band. The band would include this song in their set list throughout their career, even as other early songs were dropped.
