"Numbers and Colours / Ankle Deep in Mud" is the debut release by the post-punk band Get Smart!. It was released as a 6-inch flexi disc that accompanied the May 13, 1981 issue of ''Talk Talk'' magazine. General info The song "Ankle Deep in Mud" was written by the Battling Tops, who were guitarist Marc Koch's previous band. The band would include this song in their set list throughout their career, even as other early songs were dropped. This is an earlier recording than the one that would appear on their 1984 album '' Action Reaction''. The song "Numbers and Colours" does not appear on any other Get Smart! records. Both tracks were recorded in April 1981 at Ramona Recording Studios in Lawrence, KS and were produced by Dave Stuckey (later of the "Dave and Deke Combo"). Get Smart! (band)
Get Smart! is a three-piece post-punk band formed in Lawrence, Kansas, in 1980 consisting of Marcus Koch, Lisa Wertman Crowe and Frank Loose. The band released 2 studio albums along with some singles and EPs over a 10-year career. The band re-united in 2020. Career The band formed while at University of Kansas in 1980 and, along with bands like the Embarrassment, and the Mortal Micronotz, they were prominent in the alternative music scene in Lawrence. They released their first record in 1981, which was a flexi disc released with "Talk Talk" magazine. This was followed by a self-released 4-track EP called ''Words Move''. They had 5 songs on the four band split cassette, released by Fresh Sounds Records, called '' Fresh Sounds From Middle America (vol 1)'' (the four bands being Get Smart!, the Embarrassment, the Yard Apes and the Mortal Micronotz). Flexi Disc
The flexi disc (also known as a phonosheet, Sonosheet or Soundsheet, a trademark) is a phonograph record made of a thin, flexible vinyl sheet with a molded-in spiral stylus groove, and is designed to be playable on a normal phonograph turntable. Flexible records were commercially introduced as the Eva-tone Soundsheet in 1962. They were very popular among children and teenagers and mass-produced by the state publisher in the Soviet government. History Before the advent of the compact disc, flexi discs were sometimes used as a means to include sound with printed material such as magazines and music instruction books. ''Action Reaction'' is the debut album by American Post-punk band Get Smart!, released on Enigma Records' "Fever" imprint in 1984. Info It was originally announced, in Nebraska's "Capitol Punishment", that the album would be released on the "Fresh Sounds" label, which had previously released the band's debut single and the "Fresh Sounds" cassette, but the band eventually signed with the Philadelphia based "Fever Records" (not to be confused with the New York-based label of the same name), so the album was actually released on that label. The album was originally recorded by Michael McGee and produced by Taylor Ross at Media Sound in Oklahoma City. Ross then recruited Iain Burgess to remix the album for release at Chicago Recording Company in Chicago. Lawrence is the county seat of Douglas County, Kansas, United States, and the sixth-largest city in the state. Deke Dickerson
Deke Dickerson (born 3 June 1968) is an American singer, songwriter, guitarist and film composer. Dickerson was born in St. Louis, Missouri. After playing in several local rockabilly bands, Deke formed The Untamed Youth at age 17 in his hometown of Columbia, Missouri. In 1991 he moved to Los Angeles and joined Dave Stuckey to form the Dave & Deke Combo, a partnership that yielded two albums and a 2005 reunion at major rockabilly festivals. Joining the Ecco-Fonics in 1998, Deke toured, signed to HighTone Records and released three albums for the label. His style incorporates country, alternative country, rockabilly, hillbilly, blues, western swing and rock 'n' roll. ''The Pitch'' is a free alternative newspaper distributed in the Kansas City Metropolitan Area, including Lawrence and Topeka, Kansas. While known for its investigative stories of the local government, it also covers local sports stories, restaurants, events, visual art, and concerts. It was started in July 1980 as the ''Penny Pitch'', which was a monthly handout at Penny Lane Record Shop in the Westport area of Kansas City. KKSW is a radio station in Lawrence, Kansas, broadcasting to the Topeka and Kansas City areas on 105.9 FM. The station offers a Top 40/CHR format. History On August 20, 1963, KLWN-FM first signed on. Its original purpose was a full-time signal to broadcast weather, sports, and other information, including things like school closings. The FM station was originally run by a tape, at that time the station's most popular programming was University of Kansas or Lawrence High football games. The station started with technical facilities of 17 kW on 105.9 MHz. From 1963 to 1974, both stations shared the same studio. KLWN-FM essentially simulcast the AM during daylight hours until 1972. In 1972, the staff began a separate rock programming that was broadcast in the overnight hours, first after the AM sign-off, and then it was pre-taped and replayed the next day at 3 PM, later noon.
