''53'' is a studio album by jazz pianist Jacky Terrasson. The album, his fifteenth, was recorded in Pompignan, France and released on September 27, 2019 by Blue Note Records. Background The album, his 15th, marks his 53rd birthday and 25 years since his debut release for Blue Note. Terrasson explained, "Why 53? Quite simply because I will have conceived and recorded this music during my 53rd year and that on this occasion, I wanted to make a record that really resembles me. With this record, I wanted to give myself completely, to take risks, while assuming my career, my choices artistic..." The release contains 16 tracks: 15 originals written by Terrason and one composition by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Jacky Terrasson
Jacky Terrasson (born November 27, 1965) is a French jazz pianist and composer. Background Terrasson's mother is African-American from Georgia, and his father is French. From his parents he heard classical music as a child. He began piano lessons at an early age. He became interested in jazz when he heard his mother's albums of Miles Davis and Billie Holiday. Terrasson went to the Berklee College of Music in Boston for two semesters, then performed in clubs as a jazz pianist in Chicago and New York City. In 1993 he won the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Piano Competition. As the leader of a trio, Terrasson recorded his first solo album for Blue Note, then recorded with Jimmy Scott and Cassandra Wilson. He has worked with Stéphane Belmondo, Michael Brecker, Mino Cinélu, Ugonna Okegwo, Leon Parker, Michel Portal, Adam Rodgers, and Cécile McLorin Salvant. Jazz is a music genre that originated in the African-American communities of New Orleans, Louisiana in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with its roots in blues and ragtime. In jazz and blues, a blue note is a note that—for expressive purposes—is sung or played at a slightly different pitch from standard. Typically the alteration is between a quartertone and a semitone, but this varies depending on the musical context. ''Mother'' is a collaborative studio album of jazz pianist Jacky Terrasson and jazz trumpeter Stéphane Belmondo. The album was recorded in Pompignan, France and released on September 2, 2016 by Impulse! Records. This is Terrasson's second release for Impulse! The album contains 14 tracks, a mix of jazz standards and the originals written by bandmembers. The title track of the album, the melancholic ballad "Mother", has already appeared on Terrasson's album ''Gouache'' released in 2012. Originally, the album was supposed to be called ''Twin Spirit'', but the duo chose to name it ''Mother'' due to the memory of Terrasson's suddenly deceased mother.
