2022 Welsh Local Elections
The 2022 Welsh local elections are due to be held on 5 May 2022 to elect members of all twenty-two local authorities in Wales. They are being held alongside other local elections in the United Kingdom. The last elections were held in 2017. Background In the last local elections in 2017, 1,271 seats were elected. The Labour Party won 468 seats, independent candidates won 309 seats, Plaid Cymru won 208 seats, the Conservative Party won 184 seats and the Liberal Democrats won 63 seats. Other parties including the Green Party won 22 seats. The 2022 Welsh local elections were initially scheduled for 2021, to give councillors a four-year term, but they were delayed to 2022 to avoid clashing with the 2021 Senedd election. The 2021 Local Government and Elections (Wales) Act permanently changed the term length for councillors from four years to five years. Local Government In Wales
Since 1 April 1996, Wales has been divided into 22 single-tier principal areas ( cy, Awdurdodau unedol), styled as counties or county boroughs ( or ) for local government purposes. The elected councils of these areas are responsible for the provision of all local government services, including education, social work, environmental protection, and most highways. Below these there are also (in most, but not all, parts of the principal areas) elected community councils to which responsibility for specific aspects of the application of local policy may be devolved. The last set of local elections in Wales took place in 2022, with the next due to take place in 2027. Carmarthenshire County Council
Carmarthenshire County Council ( cy, Cyngor Sir Gaerfyrddin) is the local authority for the county of Carmarthenshire, Wales. It provides a range of services including education, planning, transport, social services and public safety. The council is one of twenty-two unitary authorities that came into existence on 1 April 1996 under the provisions of the Local Government (Wales) Act 1994. It took over local government functions previously provided by the three district councils of Carmarthen, Dinefwr, and Llanelli, as well as the county-level services in the area from Dyfed County Council, all of which councils were abolished at the same time. 2022 Cardiff Council Election
The 2022 Cardiff Council election took place on 5 May 2022 to elect 79 members to Cardiff Council. On the same day, elections were held to the other 21 local authorities and to community councils in Wales as part of the 2022 Welsh local elections. The previous Cardiff all-council election took place in May 2017 and future elections will take place every five years. Background Council elections in Wales were originally scheduled for May 2021, but were delayed to avoid a conflict with the 2021 Senedd election. The frequency of the elections was also increased from 4 years to five years to avoid future clashes, meaning (after 2022) the next council election is expected in 2027. The number of councillors is to be increased from 75 to 79 at the 2022 election, with a number of ward changes to ensure better electoral parity. Cardiff Council, formally the County Council of the City and County of Cardiff ( cy, Cyngor Sir Dinas a Sir Caerdydd) is the governing body for Cardiff, one of the Principal Areas of Wales. The principal area and its council were established in 1996 to replace the previous Cardiff City Council which had been a lower-tier authority within South Glamorgan. 2022 Caerphilly County Borough Council Election
The 2022 Caerphilly County Borough Council election was held on 4 May 2022. It was part of a broader round of local elections held on the same day across Great Britain included too every local authority in Wales. The election saw the Labour Party maintain their majority in the council with little change between the parties in overall seat numbers. 2022 Bridgend County Borough Council Election
The 2022 Bridgend County Borough Council election took place on 5 May 2022 as part of the 2022 Welsh local elections. Fifty one councillors were elected to Bridgend County Borough Council. Welsh Labour gained the council from no overall control. Ward boundary changes A local government boundary review of electoral wards took place prior to the election, by the Local Democracy and Boundary Commission for Wales. The recommendations were accepted by the Welsh Government in July 2021. For Bridgend County Borough, the number of wards were to be reduced, from 39 to 28. Bridgend County Borough Council ( cy, Cyngor Bwrdeistref Sirol Pen-y-bont ar Ogwr) is the governing body for Bridgend County Borough, one of the Principal Areas of Wales. Blaenau Gwent County Borough Council
Blaenau Gwent County Borough Council ( cy, Cyngor bwrdeistref Sirol Blaenau Gwent) is the governing body for Blaenau Gwent, one of the Principal Areas of Wales. History The borough council was created in 1974 under the Local Government Act 1972 as a lower-tier district council with borough status. Gwent County Council provided county-level services for the area. The county council was abolished in 1996 and Blaenau Gwent became a principal area with county borough status, with the council taking over the functions previously performed by the county council. Borough status allows Blaenau Gwent to give the chair of the council the title of mayor. However, the council discontinued the role of mayor in 2017, with the last mayor being Barrie Sutton.
