Caerphilly County Borough Council ( cy, Cyngor Bwrdeistref Sirol Caerffili) is the governing body for Caerphilly County Borough, one of the Principal Areas of Wales. The last full council elections took place 5 May 2022. Political control The first election to the new council was held in 1995, initially operating as a shadow authority before coming into its powers on 1 April 1996. In England, local authorities are required to adopt one of three types of executive arrangements, having either an "elected mayor and cabinet", a "leader and cabinet", or a "committee system". The type of arrangement used determines how decisions will be made within the council. In councils which use the elected mayor system, the mayor is directly elected by the electorate to provide political leadership for the council and has power to make executive decisions. Gelligaer
Gelligaer ( cy, Gelli-gaer ) is a community in the County Borough of Caerphilly, Wales, in the Rhymney River valley. As well as the village of Gelligaer, the community also includes the small towns of Hengoed and Ystrad Mynach. The population of the community at the 2011 census was 18,408. History Gelligaer is known for its stone Roman fort, part of a network within Roman Wales, believed to have been built between 103 and 111 A.D. and excavated in the early 20th century. The parish church of St. Catwg (Cadoc) is ancient but heavily restored (with adult baptismal font) in the Victorian era. There is also an ancient standing stone north of the village. A community ( cy, cymuned) is a division of land in Wales that forms the lowest tier of local government in Wales. Welsh communities are analogous to civil parishes in England. There are 878 communities in Wales. History Until 1974 Wales was divided into civil parishes. These were abolished by section 20 (6) of the Local Government Act 1972, and replaced by communities by section 27 of the same Act. The principal areas of Wales are divided entirely into communities. Pontllanfraith ( cy, Pontllanfraith ) is a large village and community located in the Sirhowy Valley in Caerphilly County Borough, Wales, within the historic boundaries of Monmouthshire. It is situated adjacent to the town of Blackwood, with the Sirhowy River passing through both locations. The village includes the communities of the Penllwyn, Springfield and The Bryn. The population of the community at the 2011 census was 8,552. Etymology The name of the village is a combination of ' "bridge" + ' "lake" + ' "speckled", "the bridge of the speckled lake". Although a masculine noun in Modern Welsh, ' "lake" was feminine in the medieval language of the south, hence the mutated feminine form ', rather than unmutated masculine ' as would be found today. The word ' probably refers to speckled sunlight on the water of a pool in the Sirhowy River. 2017 Caerphilly County Borough Council Election
The 2017 Caerphilly County Borough Council election was held on 4 May 2017 as part of the national 2017 Welsh local elections. The election was preceded by the 2012 CCBC election and will be followed by the 2022 CCBC election. Overall results Plaid Cymru had achieved tremendous growth in the 1999 Caerphilly County Borough Council election gaining a total of 38 seats, This tremendous growth had declined by the 2012 election to just 20 seats. The Independents in Caerphilly County Borough had also suffered sizable losses in the 2012 election going from 9 in 2008 election to 3 in 2012 election. The 2012 Caerphilly Council election took place on 3 May 2012 to elect members of Caerphilly County Borough Council in Wales. This was on the same day as other Welsh local elections. Election results The Labour Party won control of the council from Plaid Cymru, after gaining an additional 18 seats. Four council candidates were elected unopposed.
